Keto diet & way of life

I'm not saying I'm hopping on board but I'm returning to Low Carbing, but this time I'll increase the fat intake. Keto is a high fat, and very low carb diet as opposed to just a "low carb diet."

Who on the board has eaten in this manner? I'm not just talking about "low carbing."

Last week I got the low carb fog / flu or whatever for 2 days, and went back to carbs.

    I'm now trying it again.

I'll try the intermittent fasting noted below in this article:

There’s a shortcut to ketosis, however: fasting. If you don’t eat for many hours, your body will naturally go into fat-burning mode. There are many different fasting protocols to get into ketosis, but the most common is called intermittent fasting, which consists of not eating for 12 to 16 hours.

For instance, one can eat dinner at 8 p.m., skip breakfast the next morning, and eat lunch at noon. Or, like Matt Mattson, Ph.D., chief of the Laboratory of Neurosciences at the National Institute on Aging, you can push it even further: Mattson regularly skips breakfast and lunch altogether. With no blood sugar spikes and crashes, just steady fat burning, he, like most intermittent fasters, feels mentally sharp and experiences little if any sense of deprivation.
The truth behind the world's most cutting-edge, fat-burning performance meal plan: the keto diet

it made me shit unbelievably. TMI? just saying. coffee does that, but the butter...it was like drinking it and 7 seconds later, running to the toilet. ...which is a weight loss thing i guess.

Yes, this is about this "bullet proof coffee" shite (no pun intended).

A lot of people use cream in their black coffee for the fat start of the day.

I have (at least) 2 tablespoons of Extra Virgin Olive Oil straight with nothing.

Then, just black coffee and water.

I'm also doing IF (intermittent fasting), which is a fast of 12-16 hours.

Easy to do: if you eat dinner at say, 7 pm, then get up at 7 am for example, that's a 12 gap. Wait until 11 am for 16 hour IF or eat or 2 pm for an 19 hour IF.

This puts you into Fat Adapted mode - using your fat for energy and not Carbs because your Glycogen stores are empty.

Once you get used to it you will have plenty of energy and not feel hungry.

I hit Ketosis two weeks ago for a while and was very happy

No one actual says one has to eat anything so one could simply not eat for a day and be normal?

A day would be 24 hours.

Yes, I've read in many places that can be done and you don't go into "starvation" mode as the human body does not have a stopwatch.

You would be fat adapted (getting energy from your fat).

I'm reading a book on IF at the moment. Interesting from a metabolic and scientific standpoint of what the body does.

    Australian documentary.

It notes that B.S. about saturated fat being deadly. The food pyramid fiasco and heart associations were wrong.

    Beyond stupid.

So Cold Pizza, what do you think of this recent BBC report where they claim carbs are not that bad for you.

Cheers to the article and comments, Barty.

Yes, I read a couple of articles on this tribe that has the healthiest cardioscular system in the world.

Please note that I *never* said carbs were "unhealthy."

For many people (including me) simple carbs cause problems and complex carbs less so.

Part of the reason is that as a Westerner (and many people in the world) I eat too many processed foods with chemicals that this tribe fortunately does not eat such as HFCs, additives, hidden sugar and hidden sodium, hormones and all of those things.

    From you article:

There are around 16,000 Tsimane who hunt, fish and farm on the Maniqui River in the Amazon rainforest in the Bolivian lowlands.
Their way of life has similarities to human civilisation thousands of years ago.
    Now that's natural.

They grow their own organic food (crops) and also forage.

    Pure organic.

The are also more active than most of us in the modern age of sedentary jobs, entertainment, internet and....*cough*....web fora.

    Cheers.

The conclusion from that BBC article:

Prof Naveed Sattar, from the University of Glasgow, said: "This is a beautiful real life study which reaffirms all we understand about preventing heart disease.

"Simply put, eating a healthy diet very low in saturated fat and full of unprocessed products, not smoking and being active life long, is associated with the lowest risk of having furring up of blood vessels."

    Yes, that's common knowledge today.

These findings are similar to the "China Study," a book and study that was released a few years ago.

I don't hunt for natural game that is organic with no chemicals and hormones added; I don't grow my own natural food.

As for me, I cannot avoid processed products very easily and I don't go shop for "organic" which are less available and cost more.

As for the "Cabs" that Barty mentioned, we need to note the difference (obviously) between simple carbs and complex carbs.

I am still low-carbing and it's working for me.

I have not had my triglycerides or other stats checked.

I cannot handle simple carbs at all and the only complex carbs I eat or Oats (not instant).

    Everyone is different.

Today I eat a 1/2 cup of oats 4 hours before my shoulder lifting work out, and I'm bloated a bit.

Indeed, I agree with that. Also, I eat differently depending on many factors (I'm sure others do too): where I am, what's available food-wise, what sort of training I'm doing, how hard I'm training, how I feel, how detailed (or not) I want to make my diet/eating. Maybe other factors too. I remember eating (many years ago) 20-25% protein, 10-15% fat and the rest carbs. I made an effort to work out exactly what I was eating. Nowadays it's more like 10-12%% protein, 15-18% fat and the rest carbs, but I'm just estimating because I don't measure what I eat nowadays.

Obesity increases the risk of heart disease, diabetes, cancer, general slothfulness, joint/ arthritic problems, and several other things. Overwhelmingly, fatties are fat because they eat too damn much (apologies to those with thyroid problems etc). Gluttony is mentioned as one of the seven deadly sins- for a reason. Don't eat too much.

Otherwise eat yer veggies (like mum said), for a range of nutrition vary your food colours, avoid added sugar where possible, enjoy a varied diet, and don't be scared of fat, carbs, protein, fungi or any other particular thing these fad diets might warn you about.

Variation and moderation, that's all- then, you don't need any additives or 'health tonics' of dubious merit. Fad diets are ridiculous, and come and go like the wind.

Yes, some are eating too much (as in caloric intake) and eating crap.

And often these people are insulin resistant and now we see the evidence that have a problem with the regulation of the hormone, Leptin.

    Keto Bread

    Ingredients

    1 1/2 Cup Almond Flour
    6 Large eggs Separated
    4 tbsp Butter melted
    3 tsp Baking powder
    1/4 tsp Cream of Tartar
    1 pinch salt

    Instructions

    Preheat oven to 375.
Separate the egg whites from the yolks. Add Cream of Tartar to the whites and beat until soft peaks are achieved.
In a food processor combine the egg yolks, butter, almond flour, baking powder and salt. Mix until combined. This will be a lumpy thick dough until the whites are added. Combine in two parts to ensure thorough mixing.
Add 1/3 of the beaten egg whites to the almond flour mixture and process until mixed.
Add the remaining 2/3 of the egg whites and gently process until fully incorporated. Be careful not to overmix as this is what gives the bread it's volume!
Pour mixture into a buttered 8x4 loaf pan. Bake for 30 minutes. Check with a toothpick to ensure the bread is cooked through. Enjoy! 1 loaf makes 20 slices.

Yeah, I think "Butter Bob" is the best as far as being informative and interesting.

He has a cool Tennessee style and he's done lots of research.

    He lost 150 pounds.

He has followers in Europe that wrote a song dedicated to him.
