Diabetes: The rice you eat is worse than sugary drinks

The health authorities have identified one of their top concerns as they wage war on diabetes: white rice. It is even more potent than sweet soda drinks in causing the disease.

Sharing his battle plan to reduce the risk of diabetes, Health Promotion Board chief executive Zee Yoong Kang said that obesity and sugary drinks are the major causes of the condition in the West.

But Asians are more predisposed to diabetes than Caucasians, so people do not have to be obese to be at risk. Starchy white rice can overload their bodies with blood sugar and heighten their risk of diabetes.

Mr Zee is armed with data. A meta- analysis of four major studies, involving more than 350,000 people followed for four to 20 years, by the Harvard School of Public Health - published in the British Medical Journal - threw up some sobering findings.

One, it showed each plate of white rice eaten in a day - on a regular basis - raises the risk of diabetes by 11 per cent in the overall population.

Two, it showed that while Asians, like the Chinese, had four servings a day of cooked rice, Americans and Australians ate just five a week.

But Mr Zee does not plan to ask Singaporeans to stop eating rice, a popular feature of meals here. What he would like is to see more people turn to healthier varieties.

Long grain white rice is also better than short grain when it comes to how it spikes blood sugar - a rise in sugar levels causes the pancreas to produce more insulin, and frequent spikes can lead to diabetes.

He would also like people to try adding 20 per cent of brown rice to their white rice. This amount is enough to reduce their risk of diabetes by 16 per cent."There is no need to fully replace what they now eat. Just increase the quantity of whole grain and brown rice."

Health Minister Gan Kim Yong said last month that this disease is already costing the country more than $1 billion a year. Diabetes is a major cause of blindness, kidney failure and amputations in Singapore.

Dr Stanley Liew, a diabetes expert at Raffles Hospital, advised people to eat less rice. He added that most junk food and sodas are just as bad and should be discouraged.

Rice is the go to food here or noodles x 6 a day is the main concern.

I get lip as I like curry with liquid as I know how my system works and not have to worry about being blocked up for 2/3 days and still scoffing before a dump appears.

Try telling Thais that rice is bad... chook dee with that.

^ Not hating on rice (I love it) but yeah, we've known for a long time that rice is just empty calories (aside from a little B1) That being said, 'whole grain rice', or black rice (famous in Japan) are much, much healthier than plain Jane white rice..

Sticky rice refers to a way of preparation, less a particular type of rice.

^^Sticky rice is steamed short grained glutinous rice. You couldn't make basmati get the same texture.

Asians have been surviving on rice since the get go. Even though the evidence against rice is solid they should all be dying from diabetes.

A healthy properly functioning body can usually deal with white rice and it only becomes a problem when things go South within the body.

Anyway, trying to separate Asians from white rice would never happen whatever they were told.

Considering many cannot afford much else it will be what it is.

Part of the problem could be in moving away from traditional vegetable sources to mass cultivated crops.
Chieng da (gymnema) was once eaten fairly regularly by Thais in the North, and throughout Asia, not so much now.
It is a diuretic and aids in controlling diabetes by regulating insulin production and fat metabolism, research has found.
Also reduces the ability to taste sweet things so reducing sugar cravings.

Thais that I've met who eat gymnema with their rice or noodles regularly or drink gymnema tea lose weight rapidly, have very little fat around the belly, maintaining a lean body mass, and are more agile, yet relaxed and mentally adaptable. Gymnema also acts as a muscle relaxant.

I've moved away from eating rice, pastas bread etc, I may eat around a 2 plates of such a month, these days, so can afford to eat as much fruit and drink real fruit juices as I choose.

    Chitty,

    A very needed OP.

When I eat rice I became very bloated. If I eat rice two days in a row, even my face bloats.

I have not had my insulin or blood sugar checked in years, but the high GI insuline spike is causing it.

I love rice, but don't eat it.

^^ I thought you were on a keto diet.
If you're still sugar spiking, try gymnema, that'll keep your sugar/insulin balance steady.

Get a blood test done anyway, it's cheap enough, you can get tested for whatever you want to know about and answers all the nagging questions you may have. ie. sugar/insulin, triglycerides, LDL HDL cholesterol levels, kidney, liver function, potassium/magnesium,calcium,sodium levels and so on.

The full range costs less than Bt 2,000 in Thailand, includes a chest x-ray for any heart lung abnormalities, urine analysis and a BP check, with a follow up explanatory chat with a doctor.

    Hee-hee, cheers, NZ.

I very rarely eat pizza nowadays. A couple time of year I'll eat a thin crust with top grade toppings, however.

    But it's rarity.

My girl has virtually stopped cooking rice.
We eat couscous instead as we both prefer the taste.

It's more expensive but still cheap enough and I think it's more healthy.
