    What blood type are you?

I am O- so I can give to anyone but receive only from O-. Guess I will start riding the mocy a bit more careful on holiday.

If you are AB+ you are lucky. You can give only to AB+ but receive from anyone.

Green for any O- punters in the kingdom. 2 greens if you live on Phuket.

i always thought, they use some "plasma" in the hospitals, which everyone can receive, and that the blood type isnt all that important anymore... but dunno where i got that from...

but im sorry, no donations, im probably infected with all sort of stuff and are a proven blood-clotter - at least in thailand... they had to throw away my blood, which i donated under "difficult circumstances" at the red cross in bkk...

Here are the distributions to see how hard it is to get matching blood in your geography.

the biggest deviations are with the B+ ?

the minus, all have little, the other groups similar numbers in distribution, but with the B+ some have two digits others again similarly low...

^^maybe private clinics offer a service where you can donate your own blood for storage and self-use if it is geographically rare. If it needs used they can notify you and you can donate more.

Rare but good I am AB +

I was once told not to bother becoming a donor as only other AB+'s can use my blood and as we can take any blood it would be pointless. I later dated a nurse who told me that AB + plasma is useful I do not recall the reason why.

A- so its nice to meet someone who's even more fucked than me it they have an accident.
I have offered my precious bodily fluids, which is sometimes sought after... but because I am a brit, my stuff is apparently toxic waste; only to be used when the alternative is death.

Apparently if you are RH- a toxoplasmosis infection will make you more accident prone. which probably explains the lack of rh- in thailand. all that raw pork sausage combined with its mai ben rai attitude to safety; a recipe for extinction

Nope, it's correct, blood typing as we know it, typically combines two common typing factors, ABO and Rh+ or Rh-. (Positive meaning you do have Rheusus factor in your blood and negative meaning you do not. It's actually just a protein first found in Rheusus Monkeys, hence the name) sometimes Rh+ has also been described as D+ ... but that's misleading because it's not part of the ABO system)

Other than that the two are not really linked, in fact there's about 7 different types of blood typing factors, but we usually only focus on these 2 due to the danger of getting it wrong.

Type A means you have type A antigens on the surface of your red blood cells. (Another type of protein). Type B means you have type B antigens on the surface of your blood cells. (Another type of protein). Type AB means you have both A and B antigens on the surface of your blood cells and Type O means you have nothing. (In terms of the A or B anitgens).

This explains why an Rh+ person can accept Rh+ from someone else, because their blood is used to this factor and therefore does not 'fight' it using antibodies. Ie the blood is recognized as belonging. But an Rh- person cannot accept Rh+ blood as they are not used to Rh+, it is seen as an 'invader' and therefore attacked with antibdies. But because Rh- means no factor, someone who is Rh+ can accept their blood also.

So + can accept + or - but - cannot.

Evolutionarily this is a good idea, before the recent medical invention of blood transfusions a body would not want strange blood mixed into theirs, therefore the bodies fighting system, antibodies, would fight off and destroy any small introduction of strange blood into the body, assumed via bites or small scratches. There was never any cases of deliberately introducing wanted foreign in litre amounts.

ABO works in a similar manner, A can accept A and O (which means no antigens at all, remember), B can accept B and O. AB can accept everything and O can only accept O. This is because you have antibodies for the types of antigens that do not belong. If you have an antigen then you will not have the matching antibody, because that would attack it.

The way antibodies attack antigens is safe in small amounts, they lock onto and immobilize the Red blood cells that have the offending antigen. Immobilized RBC can then be 'eaten' by certain types of white blood cells. So a small drop as might be transferred by a bite or a cut is immobilized, eaten and destroyed without a problem to the body, but modern medicine adding litres and litres to a sick patient suddenly found some patients had litres of a patients blood suddenly being immobilized, and thus possible death, but they didn't understand why.

It was a real medical breakthrough when humans first discovered these blood typing systems.
