Veterans of Foreign Wars Cafeteria (VFW) - Korat

    From the Rough Guide:

Next to the Siri Hotel on Thanon Pho Klang. Cheap n' cheerful no frills diner, complete with booths, which was set up by and for GIs who've settled in the city. Dishes up hearty helpings of steak and fries, Polish sausage, pizzas and sandwiches (drinks only after about 7pm) and is a good place for US and European breakfasts, served from 8am. Inexpensive.

To be honest, they had me at 'cheap n' cheerful', and with the venue only being a virtual stones throw from my dwellings in the big city, I thought it would be worth a visit.
I arrived at around midday with an audibly rumbling stomach - I'll teach these people to be 'inexpensive'. The place was absolutely heaving at this hour (Thai people only), so I'd suggest waiting until the lunch-time rush is over should you wish to enjoy your meal in a more relaxed atmosphere.

I was greeted, or rather grimmaced at, by a middle-aged Thai lady who appeared to lack social skills on a monumental scale. After shoving a menu in my face, she took my order of an Orange Squash (10 baht) and lazily strolled to the counter to place my order.

After much deliberation I decided on the second most expensive item on the menu, the Fillet Steak, weighing in at a wallet whipping 75 baht. All steaks come with chips, salad, vegetables and two freshly made bread rolls which are usually piping hot - makes the butter spreading process that little bit easier.

Another slightly more agreeable waitress took my order for the steak and despite the place being packed to the rafters with customers, the meal was dished up in less than 10 minutes.

The salad - it may look like a cat has recently puked on it but it served its purpose and prepped the palate quite efficiently.

Next came the bread rolls and a liberal pat of butter.

Finally the fillet appeared, bordered with streaky bacon and accommpanied with chips and green beans.

Not a bad meal for 85 baht.

Impressively cheap, and apart from the puke ("hold the cat puke") it looks quite OK. Sounds like there are more victims of foreign war there than veterans though .

I still belong to a VFW back in the States although I'll probably never go back there - good places to eat and drink. Next time thru to Issan, will try to stop in.

Also on topic since we're talking Vets & Wounded Vets. ran across this bit of humor today:

Not a problem, simply half and butter one of the bread rolls, stuff it with chips (ala 'arry's pic) and the bacon from the fillet, little smear of Ketchup on it and BOOM - love eeeeeet.

I believe if you are a bona fide vet you can either use/get a card that will get you discounts in eateries throughout AC.

Yes VFW is a good place to eat in Korat but not at 1200 hours. All Thai's automatically eat at 1200. I usually go about 1300 or 1330.

I belong to the local VFW post 10217 here in Korat. We hold our monthly meeting at another hotel on the 3rdThursday of each month. Our wife's meet in another part of the hotel at the same time. We all have lunch together in the hotel. No chest beating or war talk here. Just decent men who where proud to have served their country. If interested in attending or joining PM me.

I'm a VFW member in Udon and I can only wish our post was as cordial as yours. Reality sets in when you get a knife in the back. Not literaly of course. But, not from all the members, rather a few.

    I disagree. Strongly.
Closer inspection of the "chips" suggests the use of a machine to cut the "potato".
They also look frozen, possibly made from reformed potato.
They are too bland, real chips should have darker patches.

As for the bread, only queers use thin sliced (and dusted no less!) bread to make chip butties.

And where is the evidence of a salt mountain and a vinegar lake?

According to my husband, there are at least five VFWs in Thailand, with chartered Posts at Bangkok, Pattaya, Korat, Udorn, and their newest one at Chiang Mai. However, we believe only the one mentioned at Korat has a kitchen/canteen operation.

Slaps, change the name of the thread please, it's attracting too many bloody yanks who know fuk all about chip butties...

(No offense, Davis - put the gun down... )

These look nice though (excluding the poofish red and white number...):

But, not as good as this!

Now, at this point you expect a picture, and so did I. So I went to google images and whacked in chip sandwich only to be totally overwelmed by Yank shite; pictures of crisps and scones... I kid you not - they've fuked up google images too...

So, I typed in 'proper chips' and got some decent results:

    I'm bloody starving now...

We call them 'potato chips' as opposed to 'chips'. The poms call them 'crisps'.
