S French Restaurant in Surin City Isarn

Surin has many restaurant for Thai and a few for farang. My husband happily surprised me tonight with a promise of dinner at a French Restaurant. In Surin? French I asked myself? I speak some French and had the hope to practice my French as it has been a few years since I had that opportunity.

The S French Restaurant operates a cute pub that is open from 11pm until late in the evening. It can be found near Rajchaphat University along the Klong (Lieb Klong Road) 08-72758092

The owner, Stephan, used to have the job as a chef at a 5 Star restaurant. He decided to add to his pub business by offering French food for dinner by reservation only. You can call or stop in in around noon and let him know what time you will be in and place your order. He goes out and buys all the ingredients fresh and does the food preparation.

Here is what we ate tonight. Hubby said it was one of the best meals he has had since he is been in Thailand. Wow, that is over 10 years now. Although I love Thai food, I also love farang food and I agree with him Delicious aroi mak mak!!

The first dish we had was a shrimps and avocado salad. I have never tasted any meal so amazing. Here is the photo!

We decide together to get 2 orders of bread and olive oil.

For the main course we got salmon with a Mediterranean sauce with green beans wrapped in pork. This also came with potatoes au gratin in a cream sauce that was baked in the oven.

The Mediterranean sauce is a provincial sauce from the South of France and it was the best! The sauce can be seen on the right.

From what I heard the owner talk about with my husband that some people upset about book ahead. But it was worth it and really are people really so busy in Surin that they can't make a call or stop by?

This is not the mark of any 5 star chef I have ever seen in my entire life. Maybe high classed for Surin?

My thoughts too...obviously can't comment about the taste through photo's but the presentation certainly doesn't look like 5 stars to me.

I suppose it depends on who is dishing out the stars.. The English Tourist Board, The TAT or Michelin....

With limited ingredients in Surin, those look pretty good. And Gonetwork didn't say this place is a 5-star restaurant, but the owner USED to work in a 5-star restaurant. The taste of food in a good atmoshere is all i need.

It's a good little thread, and I'm sure the food was nice as the OP states, but I agree - presentation is, well, strange...

It is Thailand, so one can't expect for Western perfection. If your expectation is that it will be just like back, you will be disappoint every time!

    But the taste was perfect!

^ I wouldn't agree - Thais can do presentation very very well.

I don't think that matching cutlery and crockery is seeking perfection; that placing food nicely upon the plate to feed ones eyes is seeking perfection...

...but, if the food was tasty, that's certainly the main point.

I have no doubt this could be interesting, even tasty... But why would you call it french?
A lot of people around this world - Thailand included - add the "French" word to their cuisine, hoping it will make it looks/tastes better. That's a fashion, nothing more!
Some chefs - not all from France - succeed to make a very nice French cuisine in this country. Try them!

A bit like going to a "Chinese" restaurant in any provincial town in UK........................get real, it just ain't really gonna be the real thing, just something that looks different to local food ! and is enjoyable.
So you 'knockers' please lay off.

Does it really not open until 11 PM? Or did you mean AM?
