The Best Pad Kaprow In The World...Ever!

Bought, paid for and devoured all in the confines of a petrol station.

Firstly, take a look at the egg. Cooked to absolute perfection if you like your kai mai sooked - which I obviously do. You know when you cut through the centre of that bad boy, a stream of yoke will compliment the rest of the ingredients on the plate..making for an unrivalled dining experience.

Next, note the liberal smattering of cucumber, which I thought was abundant enough to merit a drizzle of chili vinegar..

After carefully removing the egg and placing it to one side, the main protein of the dish is revealed - BEEF! Succulent, juicy minced beef flavoured with a smidgen of oyster sauce and a clove or two or garlic - devine, simply fucking devine.
Also note the generous helping of the long green beans, adding a crunchy texture and earthy flavour to the ensemble. And of course, the holy basil from where the name of the dish derived, cunningly woven into the tapestry, stoically labouring in every spoonful.

I finished the plate savouring every mouth full, paid the whopping 37 Thai Baht price tag which incidently included a glass of iced water and let the old lady in the kitchen know that, 'That, my love, was the fucking dog's nuts!'.

37 baht! What would you get for that back in the West? Use of the bogs in Waterloo Sation?

The pics don't do it justice - forgot the larger of my close range lenses, didn't I..

But it was very tasty, indeed. And that's high praise coming from a pad krapow connoisseur like myself - I reckon I've eaten more than 1000 of them..

Same protein or do you mix it up? I'll occasionally go for shrimp or squid but generally d=beef or chicken - although I find that chicken is the hardest for the sellers to perfect, tends to come out a little dry.

Ros Dee give-aways if I'm not mistaken. They do the job though all the same. I make a mean Pad Kaprow myself but the fumes from garlic in the hot oil in the beginning always make me cough like a 40 a day man.

My real favorite is squid or prawns, then chicken, do have pork or beef once a week, even have goat on odd occasions.
My only worry is the sodium content , the fish sauce and oyster sauce, but it doesn't taste the same as salt reduced version.

That plate looks almost Royal Daulton bone china....but I expect it's actually platic, made in China...right? Good looking egg too....they usually overcook the egg so it ends up with the consisency of a hockey puck. Strange thing, but I've always had the best Kaprow at roadside service stations....wonder why...maybe they add a bit of diesel fuel....

I think the secret to a good street style krapao is to turn up mid to late lunch time when the wok is starting to get really shitty and full of flavour. Get there too early and you'll find yourself with dish that's a bit too clean and tasteless for my liking. My favorite is pad krapao neuuererere! (spelling)

It sounds to me like it's time for the annual Teakdoor group eye test.

Its not bad for an egg, but don't cream your pants over it. It's got no black pepper on it for starters.

I think the road side shed adjoined to a petrol station which proudly boasts, 'last gasoline for 500 miles' was fresh out of cracked-black pepper and sea salt, FP..
