    Crap food & kids

This subject has many implications, The way Thai women tend to indulge their kids being one.
My wife was reared in frugal environment, mainly eating food that was grown on their farm cooked and put up for consumption with almost no waste but she indulges our daughters with whatever crap food they want to eat.

Tonight I blew my stack, she cooked a perfectly adequate and nutritious meal, vegetables and seasoned pork on rice. One girl ate the lot but the other ate less than a 1/4 of it.
About 1 hr later I went in while they were doing home work with Mum to see them snacking on peanut butter and cracker biscuits.

My wife explained that they were hungry, of course they were!
One didn't eat her dinner and now she was rewarding that behavior by letting them snack on rubbish.

I don't know how to get through to these woman, as a treat there is nothing wrong with snacks. but its no substitute for nutritious food.

I see kids around here whose diet consists of packet snacks at home and at school.

I recently watched a docu by al jazzera, titled "Fast food fat profits" showing the problems that the USA currently faces with obesity and diabetes.

At my daughters school there is high proportion of fat near obese young girls.
I fear that the same thing is happening in this country.
I;m getting frustrated in trying to get the message across, anyone with an answer ?
There can’t be good living where there is not good drinking

Yep, show them some of my cooking threads and tell them they will have to live with me if they don't eat all their dinner, that should sort them

Shouldn't have thrown the pea soup away, could have sent that to them as a sample of the delicious food they would be getting here

Filling up on snacks after not eating a meal is obviously unhealthy.

Cooperation from the missus a must. Needs to use the ole, if you don't eat your meat you can't have pudding approach. The one who ate all her dinner given peanut butter and crackers with the other getting nothing. Message soon gets across.

Would you put your foot down if they were boys? The little princesses have a way of getting away with more than the boys do.

A farang. Stuff 'em, we know best. The amount of crap junk food they sell in these supermarkets is awful. This in a country that puts sugar in noodle soup.

The Thai diet is consisting of more and more crap & sugar, but what is also disturbing is that before they drank water, now they will have a cup of sugared "crap" in their hands, without a doubt I'm seeing more and more fat people and kids, the only answer is to be firm and fair and try to teach them good eating habits, the problem is so many parents have poor diets these days.

I really don't want to offend, but I see you supplying your girls with snacks whenever I'm in the village. Whether it's sugar laden crap or supposedly healthy stuff like that plastic seaweed, I don't know, but they certainly seem to be encouraged to eat between meals by both parents.

    Food for thought.

The KGB has a good motto, 'If they don't know about it, it doesn't exist'.

Just substitute this from torture/murder to kids snack food. Don't have shite food in the house from an early age and they wont know it exists. When they get older they can only have some as a special treat when ye go out.

This would require a bit of effort and general awareness, so not too easy to manage among Thais I'd imagine.

I wouldn't worry too much, I don't think food is as much to blame, more lack of activity and excercise

Maybe the one daughter didn't enjoy the meal that night as much as her sister.
    Everyones metabolism is different too

I remember as a child my brother hated Sunday dinners,
I ate all mine and remember my brother getting a good hiding for not finishing his.
I finished his while he was gettin a belting, lovely
He still is a small eater

Just make one simple easy rule that the kids have to adhere to peterpan.

Finish your dinner and you can eat what the hell you want after.

Tell the missus the rule and stick to it. If the kiddies finish thier grub, they should be full and not want to eat too much shite later on.
Can also give them a reward if they finish all their tukka on mon-fri and give them a choice of whatever they want to eat for dinner n a Saturday as a kinda sweetener.
Wish my Mum done this when I was a kid becuase I lived on crap for a few years in my younger life.

Pity the kids in Thailand, nobody ever stayed full for long eating rice ,
spud based meals made the west great.

peanut butter and crackers is not necessarily junk food., lots of nutrients.
so long as they get plenty of exercise to burn it off

    And gave us arthritis.

We can thank Sir Walter Raleigh for that actually (along with tobacco, so he deserved to be beheaded). Whoever first refined sugar deserves worse though.

Other than peanut butter amd jam we do not keep any Junk food in the house, no sweets. no sugar drinks, no chips.

I must admit when I go out to the on my weekly cricket outing at the park.
The girls tag along because they know that when the old man gets a bit pissed he's an easy touch for 20 Bt to buy some snacks.

^^I agree. I have eleven year old twins, and they would eat junk if it was available. I always have lots of fruit in the kitchen, and they can eat it anytime they want. But, there is very little junk. My wife bakes cookies for them to take to school in their lunches. If we go out, they generally get some ice cream at the mall - big treat. I imagine they buy crap at school, but they can't do much damage on 15 baht a day each.

No answer but I also have the same problem. I see nothing wrong with some sweets during the day but not in the morning or before bed.
Things that make it hard are one the wife having a shop full of sweets when they stay in the village. and the MIL doesnt seem to understand the problems with eating junk food in the mornings or night.
I try and hide any soft drinks at home and keep a fidge full of juice, when ever in 7/11 I tell them they can have a toy or foods that arent full of sugar. They go for the toy every time.
Also keeping many types of fruit at home seems to help but gets expensive.

Yep, too many fat kids rearing their ample buttocks around street vendors thesedays. Street food: don't worry about the hygiene element, worry about the sheer volume of cholesterol that the silly pratts douse the grub in.

Celery and peanut butter (dip the stick in the jar) is a delicious and nutricious snack.
I agree about the western diet being more nutricious, not to mention tastier.
my young feller (almost 5) sat with a plate of rice and veges will slowly and laboriously, with lots of prodding, get through it, because it's bland and shit.
Sit him down to a roast dinner or something tsty and it's easy to see he's enjoying his food.
I made a dinner he and his mum loved the other night.
hamburger patties (minced beef, onions, salt, pepper, eggs, mixed herbs, bread crumbs) Salad (lettuce, tomatoes, cheese (matured cheddar) raw onions, boiled egg, dressing (olive oil, white wine vinegar, salt and pepper) and pasta alfredo.
    Talk about wolf it down.
After getting back from his annual two weeks at grannies in the countryside with no respite from bland Chinese crap he's straight into the cheese or anything tasty or tangy he can get.
I let him have a bag od crisps every now and then.
I think there's a lot to be said for our diet of meat and potatoes.
Onions, tomatoes, mushrooms, cabbage, garlic, onions and onions.
    Did I mention the onions?
Roast lamb, cold roast beef sandwiches with tomato and lettuce.
Sardines spread on toast with squezzed lemon and a sprinkling of ground black pepper,.
but for snacks, peanut butter or vegemite sandwich.

    Eating "Junk" food

Yes I do know how...but it will require your wife's agreement and her help...and from what you say that may be hard to get.
Although this seems "cruel" it's really not. The "answer" is not to let them eat the junk food....even though that's not easy to enforce. I have a 16 year old grand daughter...and I know the problem. When they are hungary and real nutritous food is provided, they will eat. As I said, this seems "cruel"...but as someone once said, "Education is cruel, but it is still required to make an intelligent adult".
You didn't say the childrens ages. For older girls especially a few casual offhand comments about how chubby they are getting may be a wake up call...especially once they reach the age where "boys" start being noticed.
You have to understand too that peer pressure has a big part in this. It's "cool" to eat those high-sugar high-fat snacks they see advertismed on television. All their friends are doing it...and they want to be in the same 'cool" group.
Also young children actually do have a larger percentage of sweet sugar receptors than adults...so sweet things taste better to them for that reason than they do to adults. (That's why "children's" cereals are purposedly made so sweet with things like honey and sugar coatings.)
The good news is as they grow older their taste will change to be more like that of adults. In the meantime you just have to do the best you can. And they do change.
    Good luck.
