    Sausages in Thailand

Time for this important thread for us Brits on sausages in Thailand, I should add here for the Americans, sausages are grilled or fried, those things you boil or microwave are hot dogs, they maybe sausage shaped, but they are not sausages.

Pattaya I reckon we got at least 10 farang butchers making sausages, German and English, I got to admit I have never bought any German sausages although have eaten them in restaurants, I like English sausages though.

Anyway today down Tesco I saw these bacon and cheese sausages, think they were 70baht for a pack of 5, damn they are good, made by S&P which I think is the company that makes cakes.

Not sure why there is 5 as nobody ever eats just one sausage, there should be 2 warnings on the back of the packet, an obvious health warning and a danger warning, as they cook the skin breaks slightly and molten cheese spurts out like molten lave with similar effects to what napalm probably does to you, maybe don't cook these shirtless would be a good idea, anyway pretty damn good.

Glad you started this thread DD.

I've had those Bacon & Cheese S&P ones and they're o.k. Bit small once you've cooked them up but for 70bt you can't complain. I think you're supposed to buy 2 bags so that you're not left with the single sausage.

    I got these from Tops.

Pricey at 220bt but well worth it for a decent sized English sausage. I'll take a cooked pick of them tomorrow at breakfast/lunch time.

^Those sausages cost like 500baht per kilo, aint no sausages in the world worth that, all they are is the meat from pigs penises, the scalp, and other stuff they can't sell for human consumption, stick to the Thai ones that are made from proper pigs meat

Thanks for clearing that up. I was really confused about that. A hot dog is not a sausage. Its good to have a cerebral guy in charge.

^^^ DD, who spunked on your sausages??

Make your own sausages it easy:
    1. Head to Makro, buy a small meat grinder with sausage attachment (300 Baht)
    2. Go into Makro and look in the freezer section for sausage skins.
    3. Head to fresh meat counter, ask the muppet for 3 kg of pork shoulder and 1 kg of pork fat. Get the muppet to grind it together for you.
    4. Head to the spice section, buy what ever takes you fancy.
    5. Go home.
    6. Mix meat/fat with 400grams of breadcrumbs and 400 millilitres of cold water.
    7. Add herbs (I enjoy fennel) salt and pepper and mix.
    8. Leave in fridge over night.
    9. Next day: Open your bag of sausage skins, soak in a big bowl of cold water then wash off any excess salt on the skins.
    10. Oil the sausage attachment, attach sausage skins and tie the end.
    11. Put mixed meat into grinder and turn the handle.
    12. Link the sausages after you finish.
    13. Put in fridge or freezer or cook all on the BBQ.
It costs about 150 baht a kilo to make your sausages and its easy fun and you decide the flavour.

    I am currently working on a Big Breakfast Sausage which will include the following;
    • Eggs
    • bacon
    • coffee
    • toast
    • jam
    • orange juice
    • mushrooms
    • tomato
    Still haven't perfected it yet

Cheers TSS, I'm up for having a crack at making my own.

I also bought some of this sausage meat from Tops, same price as the sausages.

Gonna use it for sausage rolls when I get around to it. Just gonna use the pastry squares from makro. Should be simple.

The initial appearance leads you to believe you're about to purchase a choice pork and leek banger for less than 5 pence..

The first bite may confuse you a tad, though...

Still, one gets used to these little differences.

Foodland sells a sausage called Dixie Sausage I really like its a course grind and has just a bit of red pepper in it. A real nice change from the shitty hot dogs you normally get. They taste super fried up with a good breakfast.

Get a few mates round, fill the fridge with beer and make some sausages. Once you try your own homemade sausages you will never buy sausages again. Pork sausages are the easiest to make due to getting decent pork fat, i have tried the beef sausages a few times but have never quite got the mixture right.
It is basically a hamburger mix put in sausage casings, the wife likes the Issan sausages and a spicy paprika sausage.

I did the same, bought two, buttered the bread ready to make a sausage sarnie. Nearly fell over when the rice fell out when I tried to cut them in half! Plain Bread and Butter for supper that night.

In 40 something years in America, I never saw a hot dog passed off as a sausage until I came to Thailand. The food, and especially the glutton size portions and containers are one of the few things I miss from home, but then losing 15 kilos since I've been here was good for me.

PS food products. you can find them in Macro, Pattaya in a small freezer chest somewhere between the cheese stand and the fresh pork place.

Wifey making Swedish Christmas sausages according to my granny's old notes. Contains pork, beef, potatoes and spices.

When this pic. was taken we hadn't found the casings in Macro and used some 'made' casings bought at the market in Ban Chang.
Serious cooking can't be left to women.

^^^ sorry in Shanghai at the moment. If my memory is still with me they were 330 baht for 900grams of frozen sausage casings, they are pig intestine so the muppets might understand that. Good luck.

Tried most of the sausages in foodland, tops you either have to buy imported,go to the emporium or bunters if in bangkok if you want that perfect hangover cure in the morning.Plan ahead and get the wife to cook up this in the morning don't forget the red or brown sauce.
