    A & W

The family recently had a chance to visit the famous A & W eating establishment from America. This food stop is about 2 hours north of Bangkok.

Initially we ordered some cheese sticks to pass the time until the main dish arrived. The daughter got mad because I ate one and then made her wait until I took a picture.

The daughter finally gets her cheese stick. I get to enjoy a chicken sandwich, curly fries and a root beer.

Surprisingly, the wife and daughter do not enjoy A & W's root beer. To sweet they say. I think it was because the mugs were not chilled beforehand.

My opinion? Like any other fast food joint from the states. Quick but not really very tasty. The bill came to about B350. The A & W mugs cost B200 each. I bought two...

You know, I'd seen these A&W's while driving around and always longed to stop in at one. But, as is often the case, I usually spotted them to late to get over and drive in.

But, there is one here in Korat, only about 10 K from where we live. So, on a day trip up to Phimai we decided to stop in. Again, as is often the case, I think the longing was better than the realization.

I ordered a bacon burger and a root beer float. The float wasn't bad, but the beef in the burger was rather thin and dry and the bacon was more like bacon-flavored cardboard. In any event, I put on a brave smile for the camera:

Edit: I should add that the curly fries are actually quite good.

Pipe bomb caused Jakarta restaurant blast: police
    By Indonesia correspondent Geoff Thompson

Indonesian police say an explosion in an American-themed restaurant in east Jakarta yesterday was caused by a pipe bomb.

Only the bomber was seriously injured in the blast at lunchtime yesterday at the A&W All American Food Restaurant.

Mohammed Nuh, 36, walked into the premises and collapsed after eating a meal of fried chicken and cola.

Waiters helped revive him before an explosive device in a black plastic bag was detonated.

A police spokesman says the device was a pipe bomb made of ammonium nitrate and ball bearings, which was triggered by a simple switch.

The spokesman says he cannot comment on whether the hospitalised man was a member of a militant organisation or whether the incidence was connected to the planned visit to Indonesia by US President George W Bush later this month.
News is what someone, somewhere is trying to suppress - everything else is just advertising.

You haven't been reading one of my books perchance?

Extract from "How to Become a Professional Butterfly" - Gazza ISBN 0-9-431138-4

"....even though a wedding ring may be quickly detachable, it does however leave incriminating evidence in the form of a pale band of skin on an otherwise heavily suntanned hand.
But how do I still get to bed that sexy little sugarbabe that suspects I'm married I hear you ask? Well, if you recall from the previous chapter I recommended to always carry around with you a bathroom plunger, a stick of celery and a well-lubed......."

There's one at at Panthip too. Real shit food but I like it. If they don't get that syrup to seltzer ratio just right the RB can taste like cough medicine. But I still drink it.

When I was a kid in Southern California in the 50's and 60's (right after the dinosaurs went extinct) A&W Root Beer Stands were all the rage as drive-in restaurants. Of course, the big deal was the huge root beer float, but they also did a great job on things like chili dogs.

You hardly see them in the US anymore, but the way the places are marketed in Asia (Great American Food?) it seems as if they are playing to the American Graffiti pseudo nostalgia that comes around every few years.

From now on I'll stick with the memories.

The aussie media is reporting that he was outside the shop and the staff noticed that he looked unwell so they invited him inside.

    Photo Challenge

OK, post photos of your nearest A&W here....

This is the one on the Korat/Khon Kaen highway in the vicinity of Joho, about 10K north of Korat:

buadhai, being night time and all I am assuming you didnt just race out to get those pics which leads to the question "why the bloody hell would you 3 (at the least) photos of your local fast food joint"?

If I weren't a dull as dirt "seppo" I'd come up with a snappy answer. The truth is that my family didn't believe that there was an A&W restaurant in Thailand so I took the photos to document their existence. My folks and sister all live in Southern Cal and were thrilled to death to see the photos.

the jakarta news said he entered the place with a friend, was looking unwell and anxious....so the staff offered him a drink,

then a few minutes later the bomb blew up....

the area was totally in the middle of nowhere, certainly no farangs would eva be there...
