Do you know your Thai Food?

Many of us here live in Thailand and one of the most common remarks I, and perhaps you recieve from folk back home after the usual weather and sluts routine, is "ooh, you're so lucky, you have Thai restaurants everywhere!"

Firstly, may I take a few seconds to correct your last statement, dear relative or friend or whoever the fucking hell has decided to phone me up without the knowledge that the world is infact split into several different time zones and although you're currently on your second pint of the evening, I'm in fact in bed and you've just disturbed me from a dream which featured Emma Bunton of Spice Girl's fame and a whip...so, since you've woken me..get this, wanker..

Restaurants, you say? No, wrong, incorrect..couldn't get further from the truth. We don't have restaurants here..we have ill kept sheds with a 127 year old granny bent at a right angle over a wok with oil in it that gets change once a decade.

Secondly, Thai food gets real old real fucking quick...

    "Kin khao mai?"

Fuck off, I want bread and potatoes..

Just needed to quash the Thai food myth quickly there.

    Soz for the detour..

Anyway, whilst on the subject, how well do you know your Thai food?

Couple of easy dishes to commence proceedings..

One day, this nice young lady arrived at a waterfall. Seeing nobody around, and feeling quite hot, she decided to cool off. Having undressed, she started climbing into the little pool at the foot of the falls.

Meanwhile, on the opposite side of the stream, a young buffalo herder parted the bushes and spied this delectably naked nymphette dipping her big toe into the water, arousing him. Throwing his little basket of khao niao onto the chunk of pork he was supposed to bring home to his aging mother, while at the same time ripping down his fisherman's pants, he...

We all tend towards the food we grew up with, including the shite. I'm no exception. Aussies and their meat pies (aka rat coffins), poms with, well, most of their stuff, merkins with their dire bluddy hot dogs, etc. They're crap, really.

But surely it is telling that, when it comes down to it, you probably have never met a single Thai that prefers any cuisine over their own- and this includes well travelled, affluent Thai. At best, they enjoy the change, appreciate the variety.

Maybe, from a totally neutral standpoint, Thai/ Asian food is actually better. Just a thought.

But I still miss a good meat pie.

While I recognized it as laab nam tok I didn't know where the name comes from, just understand the nam tok part... and I've not been able to reach my wife to ask her.

And I think Sabang posted on the wrong thread... comes from opening too many tabs

I guess most of us a the same, I eat Thai food most of the time, not that I particularly like it but it does grow on yer. I get back to OZ and pack down rat coffins for 3 days and then they get boring so I just wack up my own thai food the overpriced crap they serve up In oz as Thai food don't cut it for me.

I can even here the irritating tone in the first one, and the irritated tone in the second; another suberb effort from Slaps...

(I wouldn't eat any of that shite by the way... Best to get the missus working on proper food. Though, I do like a nice fried pork ribs, err sorry, moo ribs pad, and some nice kapow moo (spicy, baby - like little Emma and her whip...) yumyum.

Theres plenty of Thai food that I like- I even like spicy. But not insanely, obnoxiously, single mindedly, Molten hot. It really sucks, and actually keeps me from eating a lot more Thai food than I would otherwise. Just can't seem to get the message across to them either- when you get one that actually understands you want the chilli factor at slightly less than stomach ulcer level, they usually take that to mean you want no bladdy chilli at all. Rant over.
