V8 American style diner, Sukhumvit soi 12

I walked past Sukhumvit soi 12 yesterday and noticed the new V8 diner, in the place where Leader Price used to be, next to Sunrise Tacos. From the outside, it looks like a fairground ride, or one of those garishly painted Thai tour buses. Still, I'd be tempted to go inside if the food's good, as Bangkok's sorely lacking in decent burger / American food joints. Anyone tried it yet? If so, what's the verdict?

If it is anything to do with Sunbelt I will be staying away.

Prices are a total con too.

I'm not aware of any Sunbelt connection. Usually all Sunbelt-related business enterprises appear as sponsors or advertisers on Thaivisa - not seen any reference to V8 on there yet.

It seems to be an up-market American diner, not fast food. That's the image they're portraying anyway.

I agree..........dog food = Sunbelt = Subway and Sunrise Taco Trots

But, Sunrise, to the best of my limited knowledge, also owns Dukes.......and Dukes is good.......really good.

Why don't you and Nostradamus go to the thread on Best and Worst Sandwiches in Bangkok and the other one, Sunrise Tacos........and post.

I am almost alone over there.......trying to defend my position against a bunch of total idiots who can't even figure out what a sandwich is and have no idea what Mexican food is.

I don't think there's any connection between this new V8 place and Sunbelt/Sunrise, just that it's on the same soi as Sunrise. So, in fact, if anything it's a competitor to Sunrise.

I used to like the American diners in the states, quick cheap food, especially if your travelling, they had one open in Pattaya a few years ago, that was pretty good, although not really cheap and not really quick, they never advertised so nobody went

Doubt it. Sunbelt probably own that block as they have had their restaurants, take outs and offices there all in different locations.

I LOVE American diners......some of the best food/atmosphere on the planet, especially: meatloaf (virtually all serve it), real coffee (normally great and in huge cups), and PIE, PIE, PIE, did I mention PIE?

For you Brits, I don't mean your pie which is like:

    up-market American diner
    no such thing.

diner food is quick, greasy mulch. theyre taking the piss trying to market it as anything else.

for the diner experience you cant beat the cheap diner style cafes in some foodland supermarkets, no old chevys on poles outside, and no photos of james dean, elvis presley or marylin monroe on the walls, just honest cheap thai and western food served by sweaty cooks and overworked waitresses.

fuck all those trendy theme restaurants with their pretentious ambience, look at me customers and 500% mark ups.

For me a diner is kind of a throw back to a style of restaurant typified by stainless steel or rail car appearance. They were popular before the advent of fast food. They served mostly fried food served on a griddle. Now most of the restaurants characterized as diners in America are trendy theme restaurants. Just a gimmick.

Yes........the "trendy stuff" is certainly not what I was talking about.

The old style diners were/are fantastic places for really good HOME COOKING!

Many of them--the ones I am most familiar with--are located at truck stops.....food for long-distance truckers!

The greasy spoon analogy is off base....a bit. The fact is that a lot of American home cooking is full of delicious calories.

So Bettyboo thinks I am a "porker,"....that is a good one. I have been jogging one mile a day for years......far from porker type. My wife wants me to gain weight

I love good Western food........period. No agenda.......I just love good food and have a very hard time finding it in Thailand, like the vast majority of expats.

Not once have I had, in Thailand: a good beef steak, meatloaf, cornbread w/ beans, coffee (Starbucks sucks......one thing diners make is fantastic coffee), chicken/country fried steak, green beans, tamale pie, breakfast sausage, smoked BBQ (beef, ham, sausage), Italian hoagie (have I ever mentioned how much Subway sucks?), Tex-Mex (the only place close to it was Tacos and Salsa), gyro, and pie.

Speaking of pie........why do they suck in Thailand? I was roaming around the Paragon the other day and saw some American-style pies. The price was double what you pay back in the states........and the slice about 1/3 of what you get back in the states.

For Sunrise Tacos lover, they actually serve pumpkin pie and key lime pie, but the slices are so small you need a microscope to find them on your plate. I thought it was odd that the best-looking item on the menu wasn't Mexican food; it was the pie offerings!

Most of that food sounds like my monthly menu. I cook the steaks, the chops, the casseroles, the pasta, the meatloafs, and pulled pork not beef at least once a month. Throw in Pork carnitas, home made salsa and guacamole, and I am happy here.

You just have to quit dreaming and make it yourself. Americans comprise a a very small percentage of the expat population here. If you eat out you have to take the good with the bad.

Have you tried the Road House BBQ? Or the Sportmans bar? Both have outstanding burgers.

In the end isnt it just like anything else? If you want the original you have to go there and get it.

Cant get real fish and chips in America you have to go to the UK. Cant get a Philly cheesesteak in San Jose, Cant get pomme frites in Green Bay but you sure can in Lyons or Brussels.

You want the seafood stew Cippino? You better go to San Francisco. Pork barbecue all through the south. But beef is only in Texas.

Think the Thai food is as good in Omaha as in Bangkok, or the Indonesian in Jogja or Eugene Oregon?

Jerk chicken in Baton Rouge rather than Montego Bay?

As Humbert said make it yourself as others and I do. Fun to cook with a bottle of wine or a couple of beers, been doing it since my kids decided my food was a hell of a lot better than mom's or the maids. So its 4 night a week. Be happy to share some adapted recipes.

    Go home? Your home?

You must be a good cook and enjoy cooking..........I am lazy and would rather eat out, but I can cook some things.

It would be great to walk down the street and get the stuff you said you are making at home.....but that is not possible. It should be possible without having to cook it at home.

You should open a restaurant for starving expats.
