    Thai Ham

Time to sort out which is the best Thai ham in Thailand, and there is a hell of a lot of dross, so post your Thai ham recommendations here.....

Right now in Pattaya we have Thai butchers, English butchers, German Butchers, probably French and Australian butchers, so we got a lot of choice, but much of it is inedible, so lets start with a Thai one.

This is from super chef which I assume is a Thai butcher, as you can see it is well past its expiry date and I haven't got round to finishing it, I bought this in tesco Pattaya in a moment of madness as it reminded me of being a youngster and eating liver pate sandwiches before I knew that the liver is used to strain the poison out of your urine, the next time I go to my land I shall see if the fish are willing to eat it, cardboard with ketchup on it would be more appetising than this Thai ham.

Belucky was one of the first butchers in Pattaya, pretty sure it was a German guy that opened it, although now it seems Thai run, but being the first they got the biggest market share I reckon, many Thai restaurants were confused and thought their ham was bacon, so quite often the slice of bacon you were expecting with your English breakfast was a belucky fried slice of ham, anyway, it's cheap and tastes of ham, 500grams is like 100 odd baht.

But as you can see to get it up to 500grams they do pump it up with brine or water, normally with an old fridge you will find a puddle of water at the bottom, or with the new ones a sticky dry patch, my fridges have dehumidifiers in them or something, so you open the packet and the liquid leaks out all over the place, anyway still good value for money.

Never heard of Gibus food products before so this a new one for me, always like smoked ham and at 80baht odd a packet from Tesco seems a good deal, we shall know tomorrow.......

The one in the yellow pack in Carefour is pretty good. I can't remember the name of it but it looks like ham and isn't cut into a square shape.

The picture of the gibus smoked ham tempted me too much so I just opened it, it's only a 100gram packet so like 800baht per kilo which is a bit rich, the packet says 2.5% salt and I am really not sure I believe that, the first thing you notice when biting into it is that it is damn salty, it took a couple of slices to even noticed it may have seen a smoker, it's good, but not worth that sort of money, pork is cheap here.

Now for the bad news, you know when your in a UK pub and having a few beers, you might buy a packet of KP roasted peanuts, well its a well known fact that anybody who has ever bought a packet of KP peanuts in a pub eats them there and then, the whole lot, not one person in the whole of the UK has ever saved like half the packet to eat the next day, well thats pretty much like this ham, it's a bit too morish and I ate the lot.

Try the Virginia ham from foodland. They slice it how you like and its great at about 30 baht per 100 grams.

^^Like someone to pushing an inner tube through yer letter box.

Dunno how Thai companies manage to process their lovely fresh pork into a product so devoid of taste and texture..? Must take a lot of effort to fuck it up like they do.
    Sterling effort, obviously..

    Thai Pepper Ham

I was going to drive to foodland in Pattaya in the early hours as I fancied some pepper ham, they have one brand I like which comes in small slices with loads of peppers all round it, then I found the motorbike lights didn't work

So at my local supermarket it was to be, these ones I haven't seen before, again from belucky but massive great big slices of ham, albeit with not a lot pepper, 465baht per kilo but not flooded with brine or water, pretty damn good but need to find some bigger slices of bread

    Thai ham is good.

Not so much the packaged rubbish, but the fresh stuff and stuff from food counters.

I have always found the pork to be excellent but outside of the foreigner enclaves the ham is shite, unless you're lucky to have a German place that does ham nearby.

It's acceptable at a push but eating proper hams over the last few weeks from an Australian deli cured me of the notion that it was anything special.

I am eating some Don's Hot Hungarian salami at the moment and I have more of that and a whole pepper mortadella to tuck into in the fridge.

    Smoked Chicken Ham

Now this smoked chicken ham from siam inter home is pretty damn good, 245baht per kilo so damn cheap, real nice tasting and not full of brine, bought in Foodmart at Jomtien but assume you can buy every where in Thailand.
