    Wine questions

I like a good bottle or 3....However, I'm looking for the best prices...

Villa have Penfold's Bin 389 for sale at 4,800 Baht (It's available in the UK for 25 Pounds...that's quite a serious markup...!)

Now, I will pay what I have to, but anyone know of a cheaper place to buy this wine? Or any wines really...

Urgent request....Christmas drinks and all that....

    Cheers!

My wife went to Poi Pet recently, she knows nothing about wine. Brought a 2003 Rioja back cost 100 baht, she had heard red wine good for your health thats the only reason why she brought it.It was excellent very smooth she buys a bottle every time she goes there now.I know its a bit of a trek but can save some cash on some quality wine.
When i checked the price online cost £12.

    It is $25 in Aus!

Ridiculous price gouging and taxation on wine as per.

A trip there can be very worthwhile. Any Thais or Khmers can bring you back booze from the Cambodian side easily. Last time I was there I got about a dozen bottles.

If you are in Phnom Penh there's a great selection of wine available very cheap, Bayon Market on Monivong is where I go but there are places everywhere. I usually get a $10-$15 bottle and find out it is selling for around 2,000thb in Thailand.

Just read this and thought I would post here.

    http://bk.asia-city.com/restaurants/...ordeaux-france

That wine is 300thb in Cambo and nothing special at all IMO.

The ones in Villa are 2006...

I had a 2006 recently as well (it was a gift). Nice wine...but I'm not sure I want to pay the equivalent of 100 Pounds for it....especially when it sells for a quarter of that outside Thailand....

    Hmmm, it is Christmas....but!

    probably not worth it

and they tend to keep wines badly, so any wine gets fuked

half the time you are lucky to get a wine that tastes as it should

just get cheaper wines as they tend to be more robust, Aussie and Chilean keep well in bad conditions
    I have reported your post

Thailand is a very poor place to buy wine. A reliable cheapo (in western terms) is all I would stump for here.

The Jacobs Creek shiraz grenache is actually pretty good, if you like Rhone style wines, and if you're lucky to see it on special only around 500 bht- but at the more normal 700 bht, still no complaint. The few recent Hardy's wines I've tried have been good at the price too, with decent fruit quality- I assume because there is a major wine glut in Oz at the moment.

^ Yeah, I've been a bit fond of the Carmen Vintage Cabernet Sauvignon (2004 to 2006), which retails for 909 Baht (2006) in Villa. Rather tasty for the price.

I bought a Chateauneuf Du Pape from Villa (2,000 Baht) and was disappointed. Didn't taste quite like a remembered...!

They have a Nuits St George for 4,200 Baht, a Cotes Du Beaune for 4,800 (a wine I usually adore) and a L'Hermitage (forget the details) for a scary 5,200 baht.

Want to try them, but reluctant to buy due to the prices...and because of the experience I had with the Chateauneuf Du Pape

I buy that Mont Clare crap and have to dilute it to drink it. Still, it's better than anything made locally.

There is a large wine shop on the corner of Soi 31 and Sukhumvit. No idea what their stock and prices are like though.

I always take a walk through Thai restaurants. Many times they have a few good bottles at a very cheap price. Great when they don't know what they have.

I think that would be the 2 litre bottle for 400,.

The 5 litre one is around 900. Still, not too bad for the price and if you've ever had Sato then its a big step up, although I have to agree with Marmite that it improves if you add a little water to it ( as does Sato ) inasmuch as it stops you wincing with each mouthful.

For around 550, the 2 litre bottles of Chardonay or Sauvignon are another improvement that doesn't involve a remortgage or sending the kids out to beg.

I buy wine from here. Wine Connection

The staff are knowledgeable (I'm talking about the Chiang Mai store, I've got no experience of the others) and the wine is stored well. Prices start at 300 Baht and head on up. They have a lot of sales and promotions and organise regular wine tastings. I've had good results with sub 1,000 Baht bottles. They remind me very much of Oddbins in the UK, stores, stock, and display look very similar.

They have 10 stores in Bangkok and will also deliver if you order through their website.
