    Yam Pla Duk Foo

This is one of our favorite dishes. We eat it about once a week. The best one we've found is at the Save-One flea market about two kilometers from our house. But, it's across the highway and hard to get there by car so we just bike to the pedestrian overpass and walk from there.

We always buy it unmixed so that the fish won't get soggy. That's the Pla Duk (catfish) in the bowl. It's deep fried and comes out like a crisp sponge.

First you add the peanuts and peppers.

    Then the shredded mango.

    Then the sauce.

    Mix it all up.

Put out some rice and greens.

    Enjoy.

Tonight we got this lovely little cakes for only ten baht each. The Yam Pla Duk Foo costs 40 baht and the rice 10 baht per bag. Great meal for only 70 baht.

    I love this dish!

It's even better made from Pla Tap Tim, sometimes available locally.
I was convinced it was made from roasted skin, but I learned it's shredded filet.

Mahatat market, near Tammasat university by the pier, is one of the places where it's sold in Bangkok.

There is a restaurant here that has a special dish called Gung Foo (crispy prawn) not sure if it comes with the yam salad or not as I have never ordered it. Have to give it a try next time.

    Anyone else eaten it ?

I love the Pla Duk Foo that is served by dumping the stuff back in the whole fish fried. takes a pretty big fish to make a nice salad though...

I think the Reflections restaurant in Bangkok (Soi Ari) does a nice job of this. Interesting place to visit, anyway.

Absolutely gorgeous; still, enough about me. I love this dish - not that keen when bought from the market, best ordered up fresh IMO. Sometimes they leave the fish head on the plate and I'm never quite sure what I'm supposed to do with it.

^Maybe - but it's pretty much just bone. I usually just throw it at someone I don't like the look of.

The reservoir at the far eastern side of the Chiang Mai valley, to the left hand side of the road to Chiang Rai has a little restaurant that do these battered mini shrimps pretty well.

GoW bought some of that home once. It was a bit greasy for me, but I imagine it's ok if done properly.

Yes it is a bit oily but if you dip it in the chili sauce it takes away all the oily taste

litte hole-in-the-wall kinda place? with a steep dirt road driveway? They catch the days food in the morning and close when it's gone? If its the place I'm thinkin' Been there a time or two. Kinda like the place. All the other dishes were pretty good too.
