    Button Mushrooms .

Just as a matter of interest in case there are any other mushroom fans out there.

If you're tired of the Thai ones then its nice to know that if you pop down to your nearest ' Max Value ' ( formerly Jusco ? ) store on a Wednesday ' market day ' then you can get these very tasty button mushrooms for your breakfast at the bargain price of 19 baht a punnet. I used to occasionaly get them from Villa or Tescoes but they were usualy a lot more expensive and a lot less fresh.

It's button mushroom season at the moment up North.
Can get a kilo (equivilant to 10 Max Value punnets) of the beauties for 100baht in Phrae.
Keep a look out in the markets in Bangkok and you might stumble upon them for the next few weeks.
    Good heads-up there Bangyai

Years ago they were almost impossible to find at any price. Glad they're being grown here now as those chinese ones are pretty bland.

I should emphasise that I've only seen them on Wednesdays, they are seasonal, and they don't hang around long.

I find buttons lacking in taste and texture.
They don't seem to integrate into food and dining pleasures, as other fungi might.

I would always prefer something more pungent and hearty than these obvious hybrids. Just personal taste.

Some people cook them by boiling them in water which does kill off some of the taste. Much better to saute them with a nob of butter or some other oil to keep the flavour in.

They work very nicely as a side dish to kedgeree or in an omelette or sauted with fried diced potatoes and ham.

I'd like to know the answer to that too. The shop ones are rare and expensive.

I've never seen the big field mushrooms here either. They go well grilled with some melted Stilton on top.

Well, seem someone had a good harvest and their business has mushroomed.
Still at Max Value wednesday market but now two punnets for 19 baht , a real treat for mushroom fans

Alongside the mushrooms you might want to go for the new potatoes at a very cheap 10 baht , nice with a salad or re fried for breakfast.

Lately the button mushshrooms are available regularly at The Mall and The Villa shops I go to now and again. My wife and I love them on salads and over steaks, so it's a good thing that someone is growing these things with more regularity than before.

Will keep my eyes open. Very, very partial to button mushrooms (Portobellas also, but that is another story).

Straw mushrooms, which are common round here just don't add the same flavour to anything.
