    La Monita Bangkok

Due to some recent comments concerning a competitor I thought it would be good to start a thread on La Monita.

It is located near Mahatun Plaza - just off BTS Phloenchit.

Billy & his wife O serve the best Mexican I have found in Bangkok (Tacos & Salsa being number 2).

It is not a drinking place but the salsas are just incredible.

    http://www.lamonita.com/

    Menu.

Mexican food lovers will like this place. Open for lunch & dinner (stays open all afternoon)

    Bon Appetit.

I have tried La Monita .. a couple of weeks back. I had the Mexi and Cali tacos, and a steak quesadilla. I had a Margarita before the meal.

Billy was not there when I went, but "O" (I did not know she was Billy's wife) was and we talked for quite a while. I had many questions for her and told her out front that I was scouting out the place and trying to see what it was all about. Very helpful and accommodating, she was.

I was disappointed that the Mexi-tacos were only available as a soft-shell variety. I had mine with Al Pastor. It was good, but not exceptional. The Cali-Taco I had with some special-of-the-week barbeque (it had some cutesy name that I don't remember), and although the Cali-style typically is not my favorite, that BBQ was delicious. The quesadilla was generously filled and tasty.

The sauces were okay. O was digging out everything that they had to try to please me. But the one thing they lacked was a fresh tomato salsa served with main courses, including the Mexi-taco. I understand that they want to sell that at a premium on the Cali-taco, but I think should be a part of every meal. I probably could have coaxed her into letting me have some so I could spread it on everything, but I wanted the food as they intended to sell it. Also, I asked if they serve fresh hot peppers, which they didn't. She did say that some of the cooks had them for their own use. (Well, hey, if they like them probably some of us will, too.)

The Margarita was way too expensive and they did not offer it blended. That is a major mistake. Blended Margaritas are delicious on a hot, Bangkok day. This might not be a "drinking place," but still, reasonably priced drinks (all alcohol was overpriced with no happy hour) can make customers sit around and enjoy an extra taco or two and well as giving a more satisfying dining experience. I think they need to fix this issue post haste.

I am going to give La Monita a couple of months rest and see if it continues to evolve. I think it has potential, but it is not there, yet.

He does have a point though...I mean, ONE page with a couple of gif files hardly constitutes a 'website'...

    where's the map for starters...

Nearly $7 for a burrito and $4 for a taco? Way overpriced.

Mexican food is simply low grade dog food cunningly disguised to appear as being edible. Only 'merkins could manage to create a whole industry around shite.

Running a Mexican food restaurant in Thailand seems like a losing proposition, as the majority of farangs that visit are brits and other assorted eurotrash, who couldn't distinguish good mexican food from a hole in the ground.

Best stick to your fish & chips, matey.

La Monita revisited: it's basically Tex-Mex goop with excellent margaritas...I like the place, its vibe, its Burmese waiters and the creative ways it presents basically refried this, pulled that, and burrito wraps...but it's the margaritas, wooden benches, and interesting clientele that draw me back (about once every 3 months or so...

i've probably eaten there close to ten times through the years, but haven't been back in quite some time....the food is mediocre at best and the prices are absurd (USD$10 for a burrito?). that said, all the mexican places in bkk are overpriced and it could be argued that la monita is the best of them.
