| Aspiring Guru | Gullivers has Beer Lao Since i was in the area killing time before I meet someone I decided to head off to soi 3/1 to by some under the table duty free Marlboros (don't tell RDN!!) I thought I'd take refuge in the airconditioned comfort of Gullivers Mega pub on soi 5. To my delight I find they are selling Beer Lao, arguably Asia's finest lager. 80 Baht for a bottle means it's not the joy to behold in Vientianne but it makes a great change from the local poison if only for an afternoon. Earlier I popped into the DownUnder bar and took advantage of happy hour and had a Chinese beer Tsingshao which was very drinkable not to mention cheap. I don't really feel comfortable plugging Gullivers as its not my kind of place, admitedly I took a maiden from here last week, but i don't generally come here. It's a huge bar for Bangkok and the place isn't laid out well IMO. Usually the crap music is too fucking loud to have a sensible conversation with the woman of your next hour and you can't see everyone at the bar which I find disconcerting, yep, that maybe a hangover from the BeerGarden. The totty on show are most often pretty but the hunt for the big paycheck and can be a bit of a hit and miss I've found. The clientele seem to be a mix of sex-tourists (nowt wrong with that!) and the local well heeled, or so they'd have you believe, expats. Usually Brits and their down under cousins. Lots of white shirts and ties or smelly siglets and tatoos. I've noticed the expats are by and large older gents and I'll bet you'll see them at a few of Pat's executive hobnobs and prolly cranking out a class or two at the British Council and AUA. It's a bit busier than I've noticed in the past, which is predominantly a Monday arvo but is totally devoid of atmosphere, which leads me to ask... Have you ever had a good time in Gullivers? and Does it ever get 'fun'? Now it's time for another Beer Lao and I may just have a word to that cute lil thing around the bar who's been making funny tomgue motions at me!!

| Aspiring Guru | While I'm here in Gullivers, I suppose I should mention the free internet! And for the weirdos amongst us *thinks CMN* they have free chess, so after a delectable young 20 something has taken your fancy you can challenge her to a game of chess. If you win, you don't pay!!! "Pooly, you're a genius!!" There's also a squillion pool tables and did I mention the totty? Oh and they have a car on a rotating pole but don't let that put you off! |

| Its a great place to sit outside and watch the punter with their "catch of the day" but the food is crap and atmosphere zilch. I would have said that not too many expats there, 90 % sex tourists. Its easy to improve someones elses idea but with better beer & food and music and a more userfriendly managment the place could be winner (although financially probably is now) but not for me. |

Anyway, Gullivers is a bit too "professional" for me - I mean, everything's set-up for the sex tourist... the pool tables, the food, the tarts: thrash 'em at pool, buy 'em a drink, have some food, have a fuck. Easy. But it's a cold atmosphere. I don't like it and have been there probably 5 times in 3 years, and only because people I knew wanted to go there. But I'm glad they had some footie tables the last time I was there. Unfortunately no one I was with was any good at it. Being good at table football is definitely a sign of misspent college time for the over 50's.

| Am spending a night in Bangas shortly, before an early flight home. Gullivers sounds reasonably from youre reports. Any other suggestions to kill time thru to 5am, for a couple of mongers? Rather drink thru, than book a room |
