    Recommendations Please!

Got a mate and his new wife coming over next week on their honeymoon.

I am looking for a Thai restaurant to fit the bill. Trouble is, I've only been in BKK 3 weeks and on most prior visits down from Lopburi I am looking for anything EXCEPT Thai food!

    So here are the requirements:-

    1. "Authentic" (I hate that word in this context) Thai restaurant with a garden type feel. Maybe a old colonial house or similar.

    2. NOT a hotel restaurant or one too heavily frequented by tourists.

    3. Central Bangkok...or at least under 30 minutes in a taxi from Silom.

    4. Price doesn't matter.

I had two in mind. One who's name I forget in an old colonial mansion backing onto a klong in Phra Sumen Road but it is a fair hike from Silom with the demonstrations going on. The other is Mango Tree in Silom...nice but a bit too touristy.

    Any ideas?

I've always enjoyed the food in any of the Anna restaurants...there's two in the silom area..save some room for deserts cause they are especially yummy...

oh ...also there's Naj in..i think..soi convent...same owner as Oam Thong is soi 33 but they try harder in Naj...tis the nickname of the owner

a typical suggestion is always cabbages and condoms in suk soi 10 - not my favourite but visitors love the place.

another good one is ....... i forget the name in a subsoi of suk soi 22 - big old house - outdoors or indoors - i can always PM u the name and number

another good one (IMHO) is faces on the soi oppositie thong lor suk 55

these 3 are all a little bit special!

Anna's Cafe is ok ... but

Anna's on soi convent is fine.
Also how about Baan Khanitha (sp?).
I like the setting on the one in soi 2 and they have just opened a much larger restaurant and gallery on Sathorn

Out door place with live seafood decent prices and very nice atmosphere near the southern bus station on Phinklao Very nice. I highly recommend it. Cours i ain;t been in two years but it was place I went to quite a bit before and I'm told it's been there for a very long time.
    Should still be standin'
Dunno the name but it's got a traditional look and it's about 100 meters before the bus station on the left as you head that direction.
    Definitely a "special' place.
also the dinner cruises some of the Hotels have are very nice. last one I went on was based on the west side of the river. Cost nothing to board we had plenty of food and beer for two the bill was 600 Baht including tip. They had a looud-ass disco below but up top side was a wonderful view of the Bangkok sky line. Great treat for someone just over for holiday.

The only one worth bothering with is Baan Kanitha on Sukhumvit Soi 23.

Phone 02 258 4128 as it gets busy every day.

Torbers, what about that restaurant where they got gals to feed you, not sure if they are naked and that but that would leave a lasting impression on them

Actually, on a more serious note, the Oriental has a place the "other" side of the river that is crap... But foreigners love it because it's got all that dancing and shit.

Personally I would take them to a restaraunt near the old Tammassat Uni grounds - great views and great history and you get to see both the Grand Palace and the Temple of Dawn

    Well, Naj is special...

for something really special on the river I would choose 'The Good View' which is at the very end of Chaeron Krung Road...situated right on the bend of the river...very good food..truely a night to remember with the touch of romantic thrown in...reasonably expensive
