Tell us your food secrets

They can be tips to jazz up your favourite food, strange combinations that you eat, comfort food, the fact that you can't even boil an egg or that you're a cordon bleu chef - anything to do with food.

OK, one of mine:

Whenever I check into a hotel the very first thing I do is check out the room service menu. I virtually never order from it, I just love reading menus (So, thanks Timber for the recent ones you've been posting!)

Strange combinations?

My favourite is " slice of brown bread- crunchy peanut butter- proper cheese( not processed slices) - pop it under the grill till the cheese melts " bloody great !

Not that any of you foodies would ever eat canned tomato soup, but if you did, adding a dessertspoon of salsa gives it zest & adds nice texture.

Milk with Sangsom.

I also like to boil carrot with my potatoes and mash them together.

Blended with milk, natural yoghurt, ice, banana and pinapple - carrot is also nice.

When I stayed at my grandmother's gaff, I used to eat Weetabix with Marmite. It was ok, but weetbix with milk is better.

What type of marmalade? Coarse cut? Seville (yes, they should all be Seville, but they're not!)? Lime? Fine cut?
Which do you put on the bread first? Vegemite, right?

Food tips Rain? Not sure, too many to choose from.

Always boil potatoes and scratch them with a fork prior to roasting, brush on extrta virgin olive oil.

Add a dash of curry to stewed tomatoes for a zing.

Grate cheese with a vegetable peeler if you don't want to dirty the grater and you only need a little.

Soak Feta cheese in water to get rid of the over salty taste.Applies to Kalamatta olives too.

Keep a tub of natural youghurt in the fridge past it's expiry date then make more youghurt out of it.Nothing beats home made.

Marinate meat before BBQing for at least an hour and preferably overnight in your favouite marinade.

Soak lambs' brains in milk before coating in home made bread crumbs and lightly sauteeing them in butter.

Chill onions in the fridge before cutting and your eyes won't tear up.(old one)
Grapes washed with a dash of balsamic vinegar and salt add to flavour so do strawberries to champagne.

Get a maid and teach her all of the above.
