Lipton Tea ~ Why Is It Shite ?

As am American I like Lipton tea and guess always thought that was what tea tasted like.

After reading about the best English Brekkie and how it needs to have a proper English tea to qualify I am wondering what is the big difference?

I have had Twinnings and some other English brand and I think both tasted fine and were rather similar to what Lipton tea tasted like once brewed and doused with milk.

So why is Lipton Tea Shite ?

Lipton has got better, but it just aint strong enough to compare to a traditional English cup of tea.

I've found some new, cheaper, better stuff.... Liquid Gold Ceylon tea from Stassen goes for 115 baht for 100 bags in Makro.

They also have their own make, Aro English tea bags (100 for just over 100 baht) which I haven't tried yet.

Liptons too mild for me. I like a nice stout English breakfast tea.
Twinings is fine, but too expensive here.

last year staying 1 month apartment pattaya, went to the local 7/11 for tea.
said char/chai and motioned to drink, blank look.
when the nice nice shop assistant came over to help me she told me
    ahh..... lipton.
    now i don't say char/chai, only lipton.

Liptons just makes slightly coloured water. For a posh tea (yes, I can be cultured sometimes, Marmers) I like Earl Grey with lemon. For a tea that I'm going to put milk in & drink (as part of an English brekkie for instance), I do prefer the type of tea you can buy in UK (I've found a couple of shops here that sell it) like PG Tips, Tetley or Yorkshire Tea.

Twinings and Lipton are both sub-standard catering to foreigners.
They sell PG Tips, Yorkshire Tea and Waitrose own brand in supermarkets in bangkok so there is hope.

Overpriced though, normally get it brought over from England. Stassen also do specialised tea at about 100 baht for 25 compared to 140 baht for 25 Twinnings.

Seriously try the liquid gold, it's half the price of lipton and somewhat nicer.

Lipton all the way! Just the right balance of flavour, strength, bite, and smoothness.

After years of being a tea snob ('This darjeeling comes from a estate on a north-facing slope; the leaves are picked just before dawn on a new moon day by left-handed virgins singing traditional hymns'), I found Lipton tea does quite nicely.

Strength-wise, I use two bags for one-and-half cup water.

Still like Darjeeling when making a traditional masala chai (ginger, cardamom, anise; all boiled in milk, not water), but strangely, Darjeeling straight makes me pee frequently.

    (begin rant)
Earl Gray is for tea-traitors! Why add flavouring to an already delicious beverage? And the bergamot essential oil is extracted using harmful chemicals, traces of which are in the oil.

If you like the Earl Gray taste, get some Earl Gray-flavoured chewing gum from the Nordic countries. Swedes even love Earl Gray scented chewing tobacco! And I found an adult shop in Finland that even sold Earl Gray-flavoured edible lube!
    (end rant)

For a really strong and flavourful cuppa, try to find some "Golden Dust" -- the Indian community in BKK might know where to get some.

I have just had an Earl Grey with milk... Is that wrong?

Liptons do very good iced tea but their teabags for hot tea are not a patch on Tetleys or PG Tips...

2 bags of Liptons left in the hot water long enough can make a passable cuppa...
