Well, the thing about being in a job that involves the public, is you got to like your job, otherwise it is obvious

the friendly girls in bars are just that, friendly. Yes they are paid to be there but they also enjoy interacting with the customers.

Smeg, your jaundiced view of them is sad, but maybe a reflection on your own behaviour. Those girls are not stupid and can tell someone who is not honest in their feelings very quickly.
    I have reported your post

I'm a realist. Dr, unless you are speaking from your professional viewpoint, as a Dr of motivation psychology, there is no way you can state that "they enjoy interacting with the customers" as a general comment. How could you possibly know that? Next you'll be telling me that all gogobar girls enjoy what they do after they are barfined.

In my view, the girls in these bars are generally working there as hostesses out of necessity. They are friendly to their customers in the same way that you are (hopefully) friendly to your boss. And I'm fairly sure that they consider the farangs in the bar to be their customers, not their friends...

I have a strong suspicion that the above is a primary reason that guys emigrate to Thailand, because of their new found "friends" in these bars. I think that 99% of men in the world would share my view, that these girls are generally pleasant and polite and fun-loving (of course, they are Thai!), but you aren't their friend, and you must be very lonely if you consider yourself to be.

Agree completely. went there yesterday with a friend who was in town, and although we only stayed for about 2 hours, the food was good and the drinks reasonably prices. I didn't really notice the music, which is probably a plus - at least you can easily hold a conversation there. And there were a few cuties milling about, but fortunately minding their own business......

One thing I like about it is the mix of people - couples, whores, office workers, sex tourists (well, could probably do without them), backpackers, etc. Staff is OK - got nothing to complain about, but nothing to compliment them on either. Bit like the music, actually......
Any error in tact, fact or spelling is purely due to transmissional errors...

Could be Smeg (about the primary reason), but you obviously do not want to understand the difference between "being friendly" and being a friend.

It is possible to become friends, I am sure, but that is not the point I was making.

^ Pooly referred to them as his friends. That's up to him, of course.

You said that they enjoy interacting with the customers. I was merely pointing out that just because they may be good at their job (being friendly), it doesn't mean that they necessarily enjoy it, and I think that given they choice, they'd rather be elsewhere.

My comments about friends was spot on. And I don't look for friends on the net, I look for debate. In my first week in LOS I enjoyed the novelty of girls working in bars coming to talk to me and taking an "interest" in me. Thing is, its their job, they are paid to do that, and I'd only consider them a "friend" if they would come there to talk to me on their day off.....
What was your point? Yep I missed it.
Firstly, Gullivers music up to date?

    Big call.........we'll have a bet.

So are you saying I'm some kind of freak because I call them my friends?
Or I'm being conned so therefore they are not my friend?
You've actually been in the bar for 2 minutes, not with me or while I'm there but you can tell me their friendship is a sham!
And you decide what qualifies as friendship!

I've always held the opinion that you and BangerPhil were like two peas in a pod!
    You're both very shallow people.
You judge other people simply by what you can get out of them. Friendship is reserved for a 'seed' not a 'leecher'.
It's no surprise that you have a misguided idea of friendship.

^ Pooly, I have my beliefs about what constitutes friendship, and hostesses employed by a bar to talk to and play pool with the customers isn't in the list. Sorry!

I've recently made friends with several pieces of wood.

I'm not paying them, but they really don't have much choice in the matter.

I'm just going to go and take my medication...

Marmite....I live in Bangkok, I was born in Cardiff....other than some strange desire to annoy me, what is the basis for calling me a Londoner?

I did have a last ever game I admit, and have played twice since....currently, no chance, but the latest news from the hospital is good and after my hystarectomy I may be fit to play again.

I'm just being annoying, obviously. And just making you aware of your London accent...

After Work sounds like the kind of bar I'm looking for.

Go toi Gullivers a bit but there is something about it. Doesn't sit right with me but not sure why. Maybe just too big or too much like a Hard Rock (although without the price tag).

Like my pool (prefer snooker) but don't like being annoyed by bargirls unless they happy to sit around in the knowledge I ain't going to barfine them or buy them more than one drink.

Might give After Work a try tonight. Presume it is Asoke BTS?

Any others of a similar ilk besides Gullivers?

    Anything similar near Victory?

    Cheers!

^ - yep right beside BTS Asoke or even MRT Sukhumvit,

meet u there if u like! u have to walk up a rather seedy looking stairway - but its quite ok once u get up there.

theres a couple of others around like ball in hand - another new one across the road at times square -

but since i know most ppl in After work - i tend to like going there.

( they also have a food menu - or plenty of street carts down below)

Victory - i dunno abt - the only place i been there is Saxphone Bar - no pool tables but plenty of good live music and no annoying bargirls ( dont get me wrong bargirls are OK - just need a break from em sometinmes! )

I'll let you guys in on a little secret. The cocktail bar in Soi Cowboy (next door to Long Gun) has a half decent pool table on the second floor which is hardly ever used. 20 baht a game. When you play there you will normally have a full-time waitress there to handle drinks and arranging the table for each game. Used to take the wife there for a game every now and then (yeah - I am a classy kind of guy!) - and we would normally have the room to ourself. It's even got a TV and it's own stereo system, so you can choose your own music (and volume!). Bring your own music if you'd like. Just go through the go-go bar, and through the door on the left just before the restrooms.

Don't forget to ask the waitress to show you the hidden entrance to the short-time room. You would never have found it on your own.....

Of course, my main reason for playing there is that my wife normally beats the crap out of me in pool. And I am the one who taught her how to play! If that happened in front of a lot of people, it would just be too humiliating for me, and I would end up drinking too much.

    Which usually happens anyway........

It won't be as popular as the current place, as it's a fair walk up the soi.
