    Sunrise Tacos

Again, I was with some farangs that insisted on eating at Sunrise Tacos. I am sorry, but I just do not see what the big hype is all about. I have eaten there several times and I never thought the food was good. I would not even rate it as average and maybe below average on a good day. The only thing that I enjoyed was their Guacamole. As for their Tacos, I would rate them along with Taco Bell. They skimp on ingredients and I always leave there feeling hungry.

Does anyone here know of first class Mexican restaurant in Thailand?

    Bangkok? (Anyone)

    ChiangMai? (Frisco)

    Pattaya? (DD)

    Hua Hin? (NR)

    Phuket? (Anyone)

Coyote is ok if you like new age sort of Tex-Mex. There's one on Convent and Silom in Bangkok and on the beach road in Patong, Phuket.

Hua Hin - The Mexican Cantina or whatever it's called (opposite the Sofitel) is, by all accounts, dreadful.

The Great American Rib Company is the Great American Rib Company ie it's OK, but not exactly authentic Mexican.

There's a new one by the night market that I haven't tried (or heard any reports about) Baja summat-or-other. The hype that preceeds it is fairly impressive for HH (ie the guy is supposed to handmake the tortillas & actually has cooked in Mexico). I'll give it a go & report back.

In Pattaya there's a mex place called the Blue Parrot (a blue bird of some sort) that makes good chimichangas. Directly across from Bubbles.

The blue parrot on Pattayaland 2 is good, there's another mexican restaurant on Soi 7, also between Pattaya and Jomtien on Thappraya Road there is Mikes Mexican, and I think Hotel California that does Mexican meals, so plenty of choice here in Pattaya

There are none...full stop. Only a few that are marginally acceptable. I agree Sunrise Taco is a joke. The secret to good Mexican food is simplicity and if anyone has ever ordered a burrito from Sunrise Taco it very far from simple! Aside from the ones mentioned in Pattaya which may be fine, I suggest if you feel you must have Mexican, Charley Browns off Suk Soi 11, Bourbon Street Restaurant , Suk 22 used to have a passable Mexican buffet weekly and in Phuket the Barbeque Hut on Rat-U-Thit Road.

First hand experience would make me agree.
Been once would have to be dragged there to go a second time.

I also would like to check out the one near the night market

I wasn't impressed, but I wouldn't know decent Mexican food anyway.

I like Larry's Dive Bar on Suk Soi 22 in Bangkok and Senor Pico's in the Rembrandt Hotel.

In Chiang Mai there is Mike's which Frankie says is 'ok'.

I like the Bourbon Street Mex buffet on Tuesday located in Washington square off Sukhumvit. Also Senor Pico is great in Rembrandt Hotel.

Agree. It's a good feed for roughly 300 Bt. Problem is no guacamole. They also serve Thai and Louisiana fare (hence the name) from the menu.

Larry's Dive was ok but won't go back, though there is free pool upstairs.

Arnoma Hotel on Rajadamri Rd, across from Central World, is having a "Thai Mexican" buffet every night from 6 - 10. Haven't tried it yet.

And one just about to open on Sukhumvit, near Soi 33. Pretty good too, different style from Sunrise which is more fast-food-ish. I personally think Sunrise is excellent though.

^Yeah, it's good for what it is. It certainly does not give you the full range of Mexican food that we all crave, it's just a simple build your own burrito type of place.

I think it's going to be hard to get real Mexican here somewhat similar to how hard it is to get good Indian. Thais won't eat it. Plain and simple. They won't even try it.

^You appear to have eaten crap in quite a few crappy Mex joints.

    How was it?

I've never eaten crap, but I believe the second time it was up for offer, I'd opt for somtam.

I've seen loads of Thais in both Sunrise and Coyote on many occasions. They always seem to be enjoying the food also. And I've been to Coyote with groups of Thais a few times and the food always gets the thumbs up.

Similar with Indian food - often when I go to an Indian restaurant there will be Thais in there tucking into the food, and I'll usually be in the company of a few Thai people also who enjoy the food as much as the farrangs.

Not really sure where these "Thais don't like Indian or Mexican food" myths come from...

I had a chat with the Hong Kong manager of Convent Coyote one day while I was eating lunch shortly after they opened.

I discussed this issue with him of Thais not liking Mexican or Indian food. He agreed that they are normally reluctant to try it, but that after they do, some of them do develop a taste for it. However, it's not the same as, for example, in Hong Kong, where Hong Kong Chinese are much more open to trying any and all types of foods.

I still say it is not a myth. I've talked to a number of Thais about this. With regard to Indian food, my understanding is they often think it's dirty as well as the curries are not to their liking.

I'm sure there are exceptions, especially in Bangkok.

Funny how they don't mind digging into rotis and curry in the mornings. I think if they knew that it was an Indian style curry that they were eating, they would say "mai aroy".

Yes, I think this is probably a good summary of the situation actually. And with a few trendy bar / restaurants around in Bangkok now (e.g. Coyote for Mexican, Indus for Indian, etc.) more middle class Thais are trying it and so the number of Thais who now like Indian and Mexican food is growing.

Sunrise is probably getting a lot of its Thai customers from people passing and seeing how busy the place is.

But, in contrast, you won't find too many Thais in a small Soi 11 or Soi 8 Indian restaurant; neither trendy enough nor busy enough to entice them in to try the food.

There's a fast food style Mexican outlet in the Villa shopping center at BTS Ari. Limited menu, no guac., but reasonable prices. It's called Sabrosa Grill. I grab a burrito or quesadilla from there every now and then. The taco salad is good too for the price.

Nothing to do with that. I would eat Mexican food that George made if it was tasty.

    Well maybe not.....
