| Sunrise Tacos Again, I was with some farangs that insisted on eating at Sunrise Tacos. I am sorry, but I just do not see what the big hype is all about. I have eaten there several times and I never thought the food was good. I would not even rate it as average and maybe below average on a good day. The only thing that I enjoyed was their Guacamole. As for their Tacos, I would rate them along with Taco Bell. They skimp on ingredients and I always leave there feeling hungry. Does anyone here know of first class Mexican restaurant in Thailand? Bangkok? (Anyone) ChiangMai? (Frisco) Pattaya? (DD) Hua Hin? (NR) Phuket? (Anyone)

| Hua Hin - The Mexican Cantina or whatever it's called (opposite the Sofitel) is, by all accounts, dreadful. The Great American Rib Company is the Great American Rib Company ie it's OK, but not exactly authentic Mexican. There's a new one by the night market that I haven't tried (or heard any reports about) Baja summat-or-other. The hype that preceeds it is fairly impressive for HH (ie the guy is supposed to handmake the tortillas & actually has cooked in Mexico). I'll give it a go & report back.

I like Larry's Dive Bar on Suk Soi 22 in Bangkok and Senor Pico's in the Rembrandt Hotel. In Chiang Mai there is Mike's which Frankie says is 'ok'. | |

Larry's Dive was ok but won't go back, though there is free pool upstairs. Arnoma Hotel on Rajadamri Rd, across from Central World, is having a "Thai Mexican" buffet every night from 6 - 10. Haven't tried it yet.

| Been to Sunrise Tacos this evening, considering other mexican places in BKK I dont know how anyone could claim the food is bellow average, its always been pretty good when I have been. (or do people just hate it because its run by a Thai Visa sponsor? |

| Sundance is my bff | ^Yeah, it's good for what it is. It certainly does not give you the full range of Mexican food that we all crave, it's just a simple build your own burrito type of place. I think it's going to be hard to get real Mexican here somewhat similar to how hard it is to get good Indian. Thais won't eat it. Plain and simple. They won't even try it. |

| ^You appear to have eaten crap in quite a few crappy Mex joints. How was it? I've never eaten crap, but I believe the second time it was up for offer, I'd opt for somtam. Last edited by Texpat : 10-12-2007 at 12:22 PM. |

| I've seen loads of Thais in both Sunrise and Coyote on many occasions. They always seem to be enjoying the food also. And I've been to Coyote with groups of Thais a few times and the food always gets the thumbs up. Similar with Indian food - often when I go to an Indian restaurant there will be Thais in there tucking into the food, and I'll usually be in the company of a few Thai people also who enjoy the food as much as the farrangs. Not really sure where these "Thais don't like Indian or Mexican food" myths come from... |

| Sundance is my bff | I had a chat with the Hong Kong manager of Convent Coyote one day while I was eating lunch shortly after they opened. I discussed this issue with him of Thais not liking Mexican or Indian food. He agreed that they are normally reluctant to try it, but that after they do, some of them do develop a taste for it. However, it's not the same as, for example, in Hong Kong, where Hong Kong Chinese are much more open to trying any and all types of foods. I still say it is not a myth. I've talked to a number of Thais about this. With regard to Indian food, my understanding is they often think it's dirty as well as the curries are not to their liking. I'm sure there are exceptions, especially in Bangkok. |
