    Maesriruen Thai

...on the current top floor at Siam Icon. This is a chain with a number of restaurants around the country. We ordered 3 dishes: their "signature" massaman chicken curry (fair: watery, nearly flavorless sauce), a deep-fried sea bass showered with a crunchy topping (not bad, but we've had better in many other places) and a seafood omelet on a bed of cooked sprouts (excellent). A Heineken and a roselle drink accompanied. This is the first Thai restaurant in a grouping of 5 or so that we intend to try (one claims to have a Michelin star) at the Icon...we won't be returning to this one:

the massaman looks particularly unappetising, slopped messily into the bowl like that, its obviously impossible to judge the taste from a photo, but if i had been served that in a "proper" restaurant as opposed to the street-side pochanas we usually eat at i would have sent it back.

even jesus, sitting at the back in your photo, seems unimpressed with the fare on offer.

the best massaman i have eaten in bangkok was at a small muslim cafe called osman, down a small sub soi off sukhumvit 22 just past the huge marriot hotel.

Thanks for sharing Tom, I'm not big on Massamans myself. Too sickly normally.

There's another branch of that place in Pattaya near the Hilton. Doubt it's as good as Avani's Sala Rim though(on Eatigo)

You into Chinese or Cantonese, Tom? I'd like to see your review on Four Seasons, Emquartier,7th floor
    I think it's amazing

...not overly enthusiastic, no, but I have been tempted to try the Four Seasons duck...SD, being of Chinese extraction, was raised on Cantonese and loves everything from dim sum to shark fin soup...thanks for the recommendation...

Thailand: where you can eat like a king down any local soi, but where you'll eat like a pauper should you bother with most Thai restaurants.

    Schoolboy error that one, Tomcat.

Tomcat have your tried Sanguan Sri? classic place for Thai food, not expensive but a decent local scran somewhat nicely trapped in the past- same family includes the Chef at the excellent R-Haan (they do have a *)

There is no way in hell that Tom will be patronising that place

Might be more interesting to review everyday home fare, instead of the usual and proper restaurant and hotel variety.
    Different different.
