Vietnamese in The Helix, Emquartier...appears to be the same quality as the main Vietnamese restaurant on Sukh soi 23. SD and I started with baked clams on toasted baguette, salmon tartare, crab spring rolls and BBQ pork rolls. SD continued with the braised beef noodle soup and I had the chicken pho. All except the salmon tartare were excellent: the salmon is better appreciated, imo, if it is finely chopped rather than minced. B1650.

Great Stuff Tom looks delicious, I concur with shredding fish sooner than mince unless making fishcakes, If you have a chance teh French Hill Station of Dalat is a lovely retreat, fireplaces , lakeside hotels an hour from Saigon by plane or 5-8 hours depending on the traffic 1000 miles east of us.


Very nice hotels , had very good wld boar and so so Dlat wines form local vineyards the Nguyen dynasty summer palace has worse furniture than my gran a real time warp.

Interestingly I was told by an old Asia hand here who wwas there in the war and since the Communists and Americans operated from different sides of the street in a truce so as not to spoil the best place for R and R

quite liked the original restaurant, had a lot of charms, the new one on Suk 23 is still ok though

the Helix one seems like without personality, among many other restaurants there, boring and blant

not sure the taste and visuals in such a noisy and busy place wouldn't kill the whole experience

As I seem to recall, there were two Vietnamese restaurants on Soi 23. La Dalat, and La Dalat Indochine.

La Dalat Indochine was in a converted villa. Only ever went to La Dalat Indochine, which was a superb dining experience. Great, great food. Can still remember their whole fish dish - grilled, and served upright.

No idea if either are still there.

La Dalat Indochine was in a converted villa. Only ever went to La Dalat Indochine, which was a superb dining experience. Great, great food. Can still remember their whole fish dish - grilled, and served upright.

No idea if either are still there.

yes the one in the colonial villa was the original, got shutdown as the land owner sold the place to build a condo, they tore down the beautiful colonial villa, the greedy barbarian fools

they built another restaurant further down the road, same staff, same cook etc... not as classy as the villa, but same furniture, so still ok as a dining experience. Still great food.

it's Le Dalat, not La Dalat, unless the Thai also fucked up the spelling on the restaurant, but I seem to remember the business card had it right

I think the restaurant is split in tow, one cosy quiet side and another take away side with tables near the center of the Helix where all the foot traffic is,

must be busy and noisy at 1230p, that's how I remember it last time I was there

...the wine was a forgettable Australian red...not worth a mention; desserts didn't look interesting...not with the banks of creamed sugar delights available once we left the restaurant...

the outlet is a bit miserable, but when your shirt is Pierre Cardin, it's perfectly acceptable

I wouldn't want to be caught with my shirts in that outlet though
