^ Never saw much of Rome.

The original plan was to travel to Rome, look around, then from Rome down to Brindisi and onto the Greek Islands and end up on a Kibbutz in Israel.

But that changed and on the train back to London I met a Finnish Lassie who went on to become my GF and, in Finland,
the place where I had my first White Christmas.

I never got to stay in Venice ... had to train it to Padua, stay there and day visit Venice.

    MEMORIES !
Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago ...

Only time I went to Italy was as an 18 year old when spent 3 or 4 months interrailing round Europe, spent about a week in Italy, did Rome, Florence and somewhere on the coast that I can't remember. Food wise I can vaguely remember the pizzas were a lot better than what was on offer in the UK at the time (1991) and I'm sure the pasta was nicer too but pasta even though I probably eat it twice a week has never excited me whatever is thrown in the sauce, even fresh and home made pasta can't get my juices flowing.

My grandmother lived in Porcari, about 16km NE of Lucca. Beautiful area, but my favourite place has always been Verona.

The memories of the meals served at Nonna's will never be forgotten. Occasions like Christmas or Easter became competitive eating events, seeing who could consume the most ravioli.

It's got to be said that in my honest opinion the Italy produces the finest food in the world. I lived there for 7 years, in the north the center and the south and loved it with a passion.
A passion that my belly amply portrayed at the time.

    Absolutely marvelous.

I remember one time staying in Aosta in the north. My hotel had a pizzeria and bar on the ground floor and after work i would always eat there.
The pizzaiola was from Napoli, Marco, a terrific chap with whom I became great friends.
Over the course of two months I never ate the same type of pizza twice.
I even used to help clear tables when they were packed out as they often were.
The night before I left, he proudly presented me with my usual 2 liter carafe of chilled white wine and a 2x1 meter thin base quattro staggione.
    The bet was on.
    I won.
    Happy days.
