    Great British Food Arguement

People always slag off British food saying it's bland and we only eat fish and chips and roast beef, well if British Food is so fucking crap then how come Gordon Ramsay has only 4 Michelin stars less than the best chef in the world?

I'll tell you why, because he is the second best chef in the world and he is British and he makes great British food such as beef wellington, stuffed bacon wrapped chicken legs with pine nuts, roast pork chops with raddichio and spiced apples, honey roasted duck with green bean salad, roast turkey with truffled citrus butter and grilled asparagus with butter and pepper.

Those who don't stereotype British food and push it into a 1940's corner can see it for what it really is, admitedly a fusion of many international tastes at times but all international cuisine is a fusion of others (except Phillipino food which evolved very slightly from whatever they shoved in their gob to survive) - so yes, England has some of the best restaurants in the world so I don't want to hear that British food is shit anymore.

I am no patriot but credit where it's due.

There is indeed such a thing as good British food Scampy, always has been.
The problem as I see it is that whenever I go there, it seems most of the natives prefer to eat shite.
I think tastes may be changing- the range of food available from a decent supermarket now can not be compared to the 1980's, when I last lived there.
According to some gay magazine last year, 4 of the top 10 best restaurants in the world were in the UK, which is pretty impressive.

If English food is so good then why is'nt British food covering the planet with popularity? Let me answer that! Becouse the mass majority of the planet does not have bland palates and can distinguish good food from shite! The chef is as good as the ingredients he has access to as well as accepting fact of his limitations.

/\ Do you really think the Brits invented egg breakfast? And, do you think a Brits cooked this one? Not. Eggs, Potatoes & sausage hardly anyone countrys breakfast. But if you really need that to boost Brit cuisine I'll give you 3% credit for the Tomatoes.

Visually, the piss-poor quality of it gives it away as a Pattaya special.

I would hazard a guess it is from one of these places : Crazy Daves, Canterbury Tales or the Pig & Whistle. Wherever it is from it didn't cost you much over £1 & there, in a nutshell, is the whole point of why people give English food a bad name.

You are all too tight-fisted to buy quality.

If you spend proper money on proper English food & get somebody other than a clueless daughter of an Isaan rice farmer to cook it you will find there is not much in the world to match it.

People are passing judgement on English food, when they are eating the worst English food money can buy. It's like driving a Fiat Panda & complaining Italian cars are shit - to somebody who drives a Ferrari.

Gee, let me think about this. How much should I spend on foods such as Devvilled Kidneys, Toad in a hole, Groaty Dick or Faggot for that matter? All just sound so yummy and the ingredients
to match! All the above is food for a pig. As mentioned before - ingrediants is key. Im sure there is somthing salvageable
in British food and anything that is good is probably borrowed from another country. I'm sorry but you should not brag about your food. Pick something else like your cars. Oops do that when you fix your faulty wiring problems. Jokeing Aston Martin is a wicked machine which anyone would want as thier own sled.

The food Ramsay makes is no more typical of British food (as in what the average Brit eats) than a 5 star Indian restaurant is to whatever the average Indian slum dweller eats.

As far as I can recall from my days in the UK, only Brits ate British food, and then majority of Brits appeared to prefer foreign food, as in Indian, Chinese, Italian, etc. I have had some passable British food, but on average, British food is bland, disgusting, unhealthy and not fit for pigs to eat.

Gordon Ramsay, Jamie Oliver, Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall and others are at the forefront of a culinary movement back to quality traditional British food, with emphasis on good, fresh preferably locally sourced produce. The food in the UK has definitely improved since the nadir of the 1980's, when you had to really do your research to find a place that could be bothered doing decent British fare, or go to a foreign restaurant.

A slightly tongue in cheek opinion piece from The Economist, but it raises an interesting point, which I have highlighted:-

    British food

Over the last ten years, British cuisine has become almost unrecognizeably good. Gone are the days when salad consisted of greenish-brownish iceburg lettuce topped by a mayonnaise-like concoction with the slightly sinister name of “salad cream”. The fish-and-chip shop remains, but no one any longer considers it the height of British culinary achievement (though the Scots still cling to the notion that everything edible should be deep fried).
Immigrants must take the blame for this state of affairs. The gastro revolution began with an invasion of ethic food—better quality curries and Thai pub fare. In the last few years it has spread further, sparking a renaissance even for traditional British dishes, which have blossomed in the gastropub movement. Now a proper salad might consist of rocket (a.ka.a arugula), heirloom tomatoes, and tangy vinaigrette; and cod is steamed in banana leaves.

Several years ago, Paul Krugman speculated that Britain’s food became so bad because its economy was so good. Before industrialization, he argues, British cuisine was among the best in Europe. But because Britain was the first nation to industrialise, refrigeration was still waiting to be invented. Thus, Britons left the farm for the city without benefit of modern food preservation techniques. Far from the source of what they ate, they relied on canned vegetables, primitively preserved meat, and a lot of root vegetables—and fried it all up to make it at least somewhat appealing. Even after technology made fresh fruit and vegetables available, the British palate had been set on bland, greasy meals. It did not occur to generations of Britons that affordable food could be better.

Then Britain pioneered another trend: globalization, which brought in immigrants with different tastes--and increased wealth, which meant more Brits could go abroad and experience what else the culinary world had to offer. More efficient farming practices, cheaper transportation, and increased trade made Spanish oranges as ubiquitous as Dorset bacon. The growing supply of, and demand for, better quality food altered British tastes.
Now with hysteria over GM products, and a better understanding of healthy eating, Britons are demanding more locally grown and organic produce. The Economist this week points out that such behaviour does not necessarily achieve its intended goal. However, it has arguably revived enthusiasm for traditional British fare and pre-industrial eating habits, only this time spiced up with a little coriander (and without the nasty undertaste of possible famine.)

However, the dark ages of British food still linger, despite Jamie Oliver’s one-man crusade. After pubs close many still get a hankering for fish and chips. And nothing has so far overcome the stubborn infatuation with marmite.

You might do better by trying to defend Scandinavian cuisine WS. From my limited experience at Scandinavian restaurants, what more is there to it than smoked, pickled or salted fish, open face sandwiches and those frikkadelle things, aka rissoles?

I wouldn't even dream of it, and you'll never see me starting threads called "Great Scandinavian Food argument" either. Scandinavian food is bland and usually not too appealing in terms of presentation. It is however, usually rather healthy - we do pretty well in terms of longevity and overall health of the population.

English cuisine still suffers from a relatively poor international reputation, being typically represented by dishes consisting of simply cooked meats and vegetables that need to be accompanied by bottled sauces or other condiments after cooking to make them more palatable.

During the Middle Ages, English cuisine enjoyed an excellent reputation; its decline can be firmly traced back to the mid 20th century when the quality was compounded by the effects of rationing during two World Wars (rationing finally ended in 1954), followed by the increasing trend toward industrialised mass production of food. However, in Britain today there is more interest in food than there has ever been before, with celebrity chefs leading the drive toward raising the standard of food in the UK.

In 2005 British cuisine reached new heights when 600 food critics writing for (British) Restaurant magazine named 14 British restaurants among the 50 best restaurants in the world with the number one spot going to The Fat Duck in Bray, Berkshire and its chef Heston Blumenthal.
