Teak Door - Fear Factor type food thread

My idea for this thread is all the strange things you might eat in Asia.

Tonight I had my first taste of pigs brain soup - this is in Singapore ofcourse.

Here is me outside the stall at Maxwell Market. Yes I do dress like a TEFLER but thats because I am skint.

So anyway on to the main course:

The soup was ok but surprisingly enough the brains were revolting. It wasnt really the taste that was a problem but the texture made me want to throw up. I only finished one of the sections of brain (the one to the far left of the bowl in that picture). Luckily I had a local friend with me who finished the rest - despite this being his first pigs brain experience too. By the end he was saying that it was great.......

FYG food stalls selling pig brains are few and far between in Singapore so if you want to try you had better come down to Maxwell Road foodcourt in Maxwell Road. Theres lots of other normal stuff too though.

Now bring on all your Thai weird stuff

Gptta agree with you n the texture. My Aunt was a short order cook she made me "Brains & Eggs" thinking this was trade slang for some unique dish I dug in. It was in fact trade slang for a unique dish, Real pig brains and scrambled eggs. Flavorless, but the texture made wanna puke as well.

I had some kind of intestines at Forreachingme's house last week. I presume we can include Swiss offal in this thread?

Pigs brains are OK, but I prefer lambs brains.
One dish I could not get to like was the fish intestine soup that my ex's family were all fond of.

They are very nice served the HK way with some slices of pickled ginger. You get them here too, but not as much.

I've once tried live squid. I have no pics to prove it though.

I once ate barbequed fruit-bat in Manado (hope it's name wasn't Eric). Bugger all meat and lots of bones. Not bad, but, not worth going out of your way for.

well I quite like the fried grasshoppers and silk worm gurbs one can buy in bangkok.

but having an irish mother i grew up eating (and enjoying offal)

liver, kidney, pudding, and so on.

chicken hearts (imgaine my delight when i found that many food vendors in BKK sell them also!) ox tongue, lamb hearts (roasted and stuffed)

but in thailand the fast food chicken (ie McD's and KFC) still have all the gizzard bits inside them yummy yummy! i used to work in KFC in aussie land and we had to remove all that before cooking it ... damn shame.

the problem is that sharksfin soup tastes so good. i think i have managed to turn it down once for the sake of the sharks. otherwise its business as usual.
