    Living without the microwave

Ditched it a few weeks back, got fed up of cleaning the thing. Never eat frozen meals or ready meals, I like restaurants andcafes so hardly do take outs, so the thing was pretty much redundant.

Being a person who does nearly all of his own cooking, always been dubious about what microwaves do to your food. When you overdo something it's as hot as hell, and pretty much ruined.

I detest cafes & restaurants that blatantly use them, it shows a lack of freshness and when places overheat stuff I feel cheated. I can't eat it for about 10mins and the steam from it makes me sweat like a pig. I've slowly been boycotting any places I have this experience at.

Worst of all is microwaved scrambled eggs.

I'd say any place that doesn't hide the fact they use a microwave is half arsed. They could spend the cash and invest in a proper speed oven.

Now I heat beans & soup in a pan, I reheat everything slowly, and I'm sure the taste now isn't impaired in any way. Ok a challenge is reheating cold rice, but a few layers of it in airtight foil in the oven is just as good.

In time I'll discover what I can't reheat but I'm never gonna get another microwave, I think they're an insult to the love and time I put into my cooking. A couple of tv chefs also say this. Would like to think that decent chefs wouldn't go near them.

Ten Reasons To Throw Out Your Microwave Oven:

    • Continually eating microwave processed food causes permanent brain damage.
    • The human body is unable to metabolize the unknown by-products created in microwaved foods.
    • Male and female hormone production is shut down and/or altered by continually eating microwaved foods.
    • The effects of by-products remain in the human body long-term.
    • Minerals, vitamins and nutrients are reduced by microwaving so that the body gets little or altered components that cannot be broken down.
    • The minerals in vegetables are altered into cancerous free radicals by microwaves.
    • Microwaved foods cause stomach and intestinal cancerous growths. This may partially explain the rapid increase of the colon cancer rate in America.
    • Long term consumption of microwaved foods causes cancerous cells to increase in human blood.
    • It also causes immune system deficiencies through alterations in the lymph glands and blood serum.
    • Eating microwaved food causes loss of memory and concentration, emotional instability and a decrease of intelligence.

My last microwave was given away years ago. Nothing to do with health and everything to do with the texture of the food cooked in it. An old fashioned steamer does a better job for most things I could use a microwave for. It was a waste of space.

Even frozen and ready meals taste far better done in a proper oven. Takes longer but patience costs nothing.

555 guess you will dumping your mobile phone, computer,Teflon pans,TV,plastic containers etc ad nauseum.
Some say that the plastics in vehicles give off harmful amounts of benzene..better sell the car too?

Suspect there is a lot of goings on in restaurant kitchens that are more harmful than nuking of food?

Methinks that if we did not use or consume everything these self appointed "experts" tell us are bad for us we would be in a sad way.

It is probable that much of the food or drink we consume has some detrimental effect?

Bought a new microwave a few months back....

You would be surprised how many restaurants use microwaves to prepare food.

Everything on that list is pure bullshit.
Microwaves agitate water molecules. Full stop. They don't change anything. It's not gamma rays ffs.

    They have their uses.

^Well maybe much of that list could be based on what people are eating as in diet?

    Microwave ovens

Microwave ovens work by using very high levels of microwaves to heat foods. The microwaves are contained within the oven itself. When microwave ovens are used according to instructions, there is no evidence that they pose a health risk to people. Nor do microwaves make food radioactive.

Exposure to high levels of microwaves can have effects on health. Such exposure could lead to a painful burn or to the development of cataracts in the lenses of the eyes. These injuries are caused only by exposure to large amounts of microwave radiation, however, and the small amount that can leak from a microwave oven does not cause these problems.

Some older models of pacemakers might be affected if the person with the pacemaker gets too close to a microwave oven while it is on. This is unlikely to be a concern with modern pacemakers, which are shielded from outside electrical activity.

handy appliance, wouldnt be without it for quick eats.

my favourite evening snack being porridge on toast. 3 minutes for the toast in the toaster, and three and a half minutes microwave on 75% power does the oats and milk to a treat.

i dont like microwaveable ready meals, or any processed food, i avoid it wherever possible, but for heating food, especially foods with a high liquid content, a microwave is essential.

many of the items on your horror list are just sensationalist guff, especially this one

The human body is unable to metabolize the unknown by-products created in microwaved foods.
if the by products are unknown, how can they know that they are not metabolised.

I suppose could have spent another 20mins looking up a better webpage to link to, as some of those claims do border on the ridiculous

But I do still find myself reaching for a now non-existent microwave door when I wanna freshen up lukewarm tea

You wont find a 'better' website.
It's all kook dogma spouted because the ovens use 'radiation'. Scary stuff.

Sunlight is radiation, cosmic radiation maes it through the atmosphere, every second tens of thousands of neutrinos are passing right through your body, your stove uses radiation, sound is radiation, your phone and tv give off radiation, in the city you are smothered in radiation of all types, bathed in it.

the porridge needs to be fairly thick to avoid spillage and ruined shirts, but spooning the porridge onto the toast bite by bite works very well.

a sprinkling of cinnamon and lots of butter on the toast make for a wonderful late night comfort snack. more suited to englands climate than here, but there are times when nothing else will do.

just a note...If you have a junk microwave it is worth removing the extremely hi power magnets from the magnetron..bloody handy for finding ferrous metallic bits in long grass, rescuing tools from down the well, stopping granny's pacemaker, and fking up so many other electronics.,,,lotsa fun...

Good for toothless old gits in Blighty...

Gotta love the older ones that are about to die (microwave ovens, that is)...Someone on here mentioned one that took about 30 minutes to warm his tea, and then one day it simply caught fire...

If you read any further than that it may already be too late.
