Healthy food and diet tips for the new year thing.

Ok it's January and it's that time when people do the diet thing yeh?

Due to the fact I've got a lot of work on I thought I might try to clean up my act food and drink wise for a month or two (watch the shares in breweries take a dive)

Now there is plenty of advice on here but it's all over the place. Krugens juicer thread, health threads, food - soup threads and even slaps stolen cheese thread worns you to stay away from stealing to much cheese.

We also have coffees bad, coffees good if shoved up the arse. Broccoli can do this and bananas can do that so in order to make it easy to find bits and bobs about every day good eating ie healthy, can we put stuff here.

Recommendations on particular diets/products good or bad too.

I think it's still early enough in the year that people won't have lost interest in the new year diety thing....

Do you know what nemesis means?

I'll throw some things in here that worked a treat for me very recently, lost 20kg of beer belly in no time quite easily. It's called the Paleo diet and it's basically sticking to what cavemen would have eaten which might sound insane, but it's not. It's all about eating things you could kill, or pick from a tree/garden. There's a ton of info on the net but a lot of the sites vary, some encourage eating full fat yoghurt and butter for example. I just stuck to the basics and tried to eat nothing from packets/tins etc. You're still eating any meat and veg + fruit you like (with exceptions like processed meats and potatoes), no fried food, and laying off the grog which isn't a bad thing anyway for those of us that've drank a lot for a long time and want to give the liver a break. Drink lots of water (flavored with Robinsons no-added-sugar cordial if you like) and have a junk food fix of whatever you want once a week to keep things real. Add in some cardio exercise and never mind jumping on the scales each week, you'll know things are going your way when you have to start using notches in your belt that've never been needed. There's a lot more to this, adding the 5:2 diet into things and doing HIIT cardio will accelerate results dramatically, but all the info is on the net for anyone to find. Maybe too much info in fact, my advice would be to check a dozen sites and stick with the things everyone agrees on.

    Good luck!.

Ah right, that was the word that prompted me to start this"

    Paleo

For the last few days I've been heading in that direction veg fruit and chicken but its the toast and butter with my boiled egg that I find hard to give up so I guess it's to change breakie all together.

I've started to keep a record of food, exercise, blood pressure and ....... booze.. to try to moniter the progress.

Its a modification on lifestyle not total change or I just won't do it..

Just for the record, not had a beer since Saturday.

Eat fruit as part of a staple diet.

But be warned, staples are indigestible.

Simplest diet in the world - push your chair away from the table.

I weigh 82kg at 177 cm. I will be 65 next week. My weight has not varied in 40 years (other than during one period of illness).

I drink one large mug of coffee in the morning, a light lunch - usually a sandwich and fruit, and a light dinner - usually chicken or pork, salad or vegetables, and fruit.

I don't snack between meals - at all.

    I don't drink beer - I drink scotch.

I exercise at least an hour a day.

Nothing to it. I don't do without anything I like or want. I eat steaks and roast beef. I eat fried foods. I rarely eat sweets as I don't care for them. I drink soda, but not a lot.

I lost 14 K's in about 3 months by juicing and going veggie.

Nearly 2 years later I'm still 99% veggie but only juice a couple of times a week and I'm still down 12-13 K's.

Oh yes, and I've drank beer like a fish the whole time.

Edit, I do a bit of exercise here and there too.
I would post pictures but life's too short.

I am into fresh salads and canned tuna these days. Of course a nice salad dressing is important.

As a lot of fruits are full of sugar I am taking vitamin C tablets but I eat at least 1 banana and 1 apple a day.

Feeling good, working around the house and limiting myself to around 4 beers a day has seen me lose 7 kgs.

I have been on low carb/high fat for about 1 year now, dropped from 90 kilo's to 80 in about 3 months.never felt better and I have almost reversed my diabetes.that means that my blood sugars are down to what a normal person would have, but iam still taking the minimum amount of medication.
I don't eat carbs at all(no bread, pasta, spuds, rice etc)I eat lots of veges, salad, cheese, fatty meat, fish, pure butter, olive oil, cream for the coffee, all the good fats.i drink lots of water and a couple of low carb stubbies on the weekend only.

I'm with you on the supplement thing Smug that's why I'm only 99% veggie.

I went for a medical a few weeks ago and the only thing wrong was my protein count which was too high. Too much spinach and broccoli methinks.

Don't think I could do the veggie thing.

Maybe a couple of days but I'd miss the odd roast lunch.

    Do you eat fish?

I'll have a tiny bit of fish every couple of weeks.

I ate a whole farmyard on Christmas day, it took a long time to clear my pipes.

I agree with what most have said. Stay away from processed stuff. Stay away from anything with wheat or rice in it. Stay away from beer (basically liquid bread with added sugar) and don't eat too much fruit, especially water melon.

Do, eat dead animals, green leaves, tomatoes, eggs and cheese but don't gorge. If you fancy a big lunch, you'd be better off plating it on 2 plates and eating them 2 hours apart.

Keeping a record is an excellent way to lose weight and track your habits.
I also have been doing this for four months... do one thing though if you really want to lose weight.. CUT OUT ALCOHOL.
My best advice ever. As I said in the last thread on Masterchef..I currently lost 40 pounds by basically eating mostly protein and veggies. No alcohol (I had one drink at christmas), and cut out sugar, dairy, and fruit. I exercised three days a week (2 days cardio intervals, 1 day weight toning class).

It is drastic, but I am now coming off that diet and won't be eating much if any carbs except maybe a bit of brown rice/sweet potatoe. Processed carbs are the killer and wheat I also don't like. Paleo diet makes sense to me.

How the heck did they know your protein count was too high? Can never get enough spinach and broccoli imo.

I understand that...it's all about baby steps.
I had no choice, but to cut everything out. Some people can't handle moderation in some things. lol.

Every type of diet I've read about seems to put it on the 'do not eat' list. Not sure why.
