    The Thai Sala Fruit

The Sala Fruit is easily confused with the Snake Fruit as they are very similar and also both belong to the Salacca family, the sala is longer and thinner, it has more edible fruit on it than the snake fruit, but you will find both are very delicious.

The sala season is May to August which is also the season for snake fruit, if your buying fruit from your local fruit market the snake fruit comes in tighter bunches, or you could always ask and create mass confusion, maybe get 1/2 kilo of each to try them out, price ranges from 20 to 60baht per kilo, so they wont break the bank.

    Thai name :Ra-gahm
Common name :Salak palm, Salacca, Zalacca
Scientific name : Salacca rumphii Wall.

I have tasted this fruit at Cambodia. It tasted sweet and sour and i liked it. I noted the name in my diary and later forgot the name. It was called ‘Salacca’ there also.
