Thai Chicken Soup Northern Style

I was out with a couple of Thai friends a few weeks ago, in Chiang Mai, and wasn't feeling to adventurous, so I went for what looked like a fairly innocuous Chicken soup.

Turned out to be a belter. Bit spicy, but not Tom Yum or Tom Ka, brown and transparent, no lemongrass, no coconut.

Bloody delicious. They told me the name but I can't remember, apparently it's of a northern style dish. "Tom Cha" ?

Anyone point me at the name and/or recipe?

This variation will alter itself occasionally....with a slight sweetened accent to the savory.

There's one called something like gaeng kair gai, which is also delish. Lots of herbs, can be very spicy.

That's probably a curry - sounds like 'Gaeng Garee'.

Dtom Kha Gai is what I think you are looking for.
Usually made with coconut but the cheapskate northerners like to cheat a bit.
It's a soup like dish made with Kha (galangal) which is thai ginger

No, this is definitely a soup and as I said in the OP it's not tom kha - no coconut, no lemongrass.

CNF55's photo is bang on.

I think it's similar to this:

I think a lot of people call Tom Yum "Hot and Sour" in English, but they aren't really the same thing.

I'll try that first recipe at the weekend and see what comes out (metaphorically speaking!).

OK, I got my transliteration slightly wrong, but what I'm on about is kaeng khae gai, no coconut milk, not gaeng garee. As to whether it's a soup or a curry, well I'd say it's more soupy. Often translated as spicy northern chicken soup with herbs or something like that. Very distinctive taste, due mainly to the cha-om.

I'd say it's more curry-er-y. This was definitely a full blown soup. And no lemongrass.

Khao Soi, from up north, is bloody delicious. Curry-like soup, served with a chicken leg over noodles, crispy fried noodles, bean sprouts and other assorted stuff to top it off.

I agree, just as well its almost unheard of in the NE because that's the only thing I would eat.
