Tom Yum Toad at the Local Shop

Normally whilst perched in my usual position under the local shop's awning of an evening, I'm subjected to a barrage of odours synonymous with death -festering meats, perishing fruit and vegetables and moldy peasants all make up the offensive ensemble of my chosen watering hole. I sometimes question my sanity whilst stepping over piles of unconscious unskilled farmhands who hinder my path to the Frigidaire with irritating regularity, but after a few sips of award winning ale and a couple of healthy gulps of Ya-Dong they are forgiven and I eventually join them in their past time of passing out en mass and we all end up in a congealed heap on the deck.

But yesterday evening a most unprecedented turn of events transpired.

Where the local shop once boasted the bouquet of an open sewer, now lingered the perfumed scent of a breezy Spring meadow with butterflies and birds and bees and little fucking bunny rabbits jumping about in it.

    How unusual.

Wafting through the venue was an aroma so divine and intricate that I simply had to question the shopkeeper regarding its source.

    Slap: Say you, peasant?

    SK: Krap?

Slap: What ON EARTH is that delightful smell?

    SK: Soup.

Slap: Can I have some soup? Why have you got soup? I want some fucking soup.

And with that he scuttled into the kitchen to fetch me a bowl, a bowl which was presented to me with a 100 pairs of arms and legs flaying about in the fucker.

    Toad soup.

The shopkeeper, who doesn't really care for dining etiquette, plunged his hand into my soup, plucked out the largest toad in there and ripped its fucking head off with his sporadic set of gnashers.

    "Aroi" he said

I decided to follow suit but opted for a small leg nibble instead of a porcine chomp.

And 'aroi' it was indeed. The best part of the meal was probably the toad's eggs which tasted like a rich humus, and the actual flesh of course tasted like chicken - obviously.

I finished the whole bowl and asked for seconds, which was a bit of a liberty seeing as these particular toads weigh in at 150 baht per kilo.

Phonetically they are pronounced 'Eun', whilst Thai script should read something like this อืน (any help appreciated)

Unfortunately I didn't have a camera but it looked like this. Just replace the suspect piece of white matter with a dozen toads.

Unless the trip back to Blighty is a forced one then I give you a month before the lure of the village life brings you rushing back. I remember the last trip back. I was going to work 4 months over the summer to treat myself to a new ride. 3 weeks later I was touching back down in LOS this time for good.
Treat everyone as a complete and utter idiot and you can only ever be pleasantly surprised !

Funny Slap I had the exact same kind of soup about 3 days ago. It was delicious! Nothing like eating a bowl of soup with a whole shitload of frogs cut in half floating in it. Somebody caught a bag full of the poor delicious souls. Wife told me it was a very special meal as the frogs are hard to come by.
I'm not saying it was Aliens, but it was Aliens!

Actually, after all that, I think they were bullfrogs as oppose to toads.

Got the proper translation from the shopkeeper last night which is อึ่ง

^ Removing the frogs would work for me!

Sorry, but that's rough. They've all bloated up like people who drown do.

I'm way too squeamish for that I'm afraid.

In my experience the faces are left in but they are usually skinned.

That always reminds me of that scene from Bumfights where a guy eats raw frogs to get his pawned guitar back! Gads.
