    El Gaucho Argentinian Steakhouse(BKK)

Had two meals at this venue last month. It's located right on Sukhumvit between the Westin and Terminal 21 mall.(That's Asoke)

First was lunch. Had the sausage appetizer and a hamburger with cheese and bacon. Two cokes at 80baht each. Total 1200baht as VAT and a service charge added. Overall, the food was excellent.

Second was dinner. Had the Caesars salad which was small but did have anchovies and cheese. Ordered a 500gram "choice" steak medium rare. The steak came, looked small. I asked if it was 500grams and was told yes. Moments later, the waitress came back and said "sorry sir, that's only a 250g cut, can I bring you another 250g steak?". I said sure, no worries. I've been to the Philippines so understand mistakes happen. Check comes, indicates I ordered two 250g steaks! which is apx 200baht more than one 500g. I asked her "what the fuck?". She explained as only a Filipino can that I had two 250g steaks. I said go adjust it for goodness sakes. She came back and said she'd just pay the difference herself. Okay. Total check for one, me, 2600baht. Waitress paid 200baht of 2800baht.

You can check trip adviser for more reviews. I was treating myself, I won't be back unless some special event. While good, 2600baht without any wine was a bit high.

Since you read this far, I also went to Tony Romas inside Terminal 21. 900baht lunch included again a caesars salad and the lunch special of shrimp and ribs and a sprite with free refills. Overall, good but 900baht which could have easily been more if not for the lunch special?

Bangkok can be expensive to satisfy your western food cravings. Be careful!

    Cheers. Nok

Thanks for our replies. I wasn't aware street food was less expensive.

As I mentioned, you can go to trip adviser and get more reviews. It's expensive but basically good. The meat is imported(USA and Aussie, not from Argentina surprisingly) and naturally is going to be expensive. I wasn't on a budget nor am I now. It wasn't stupid, just a gift to myself. What's your beef? The Landmark and Marriott also have steakhouses and there is an Outback at Siam Discovery. I'm on fucking vacation okay?

    Thanks. Nok

I can get 180 day aged prime Aussie ribeye at villa for 1700 baht a kilo.
4 minutes on a grill and I rarely get half of what I asked for while being overcharged.

Thanks for this, Was curious about Guacho but haven't been in the area yet. Tony Romas is a disgrace, The quality is shit here (not that it's much better anywhere else) and its way overpriced, Much like Sizzler which is the worst feking steak joint ever.

After a couple terrible steak experiences in BKK I decided to make my own. Villa has some nice cuts of meat.

Your quite welcome and a nice relief from some of the other childlike replies. Sizzler is just a salad bar, never considered it a steak joint. I don't know how much MSG they use and some friends have a reaction to it but I seem to digest it well enough. It could of course be killing me.

I've also tried Neils there in Bangkok and wasn't impressed. The steak was good at El Gaucho, just expensive.

I live in Pattaya and now and then you will find a nice strip steak at Friendship on Pattaya Tai. They also have a frozen section which offers imported meats and vegetables. KPK is another venue with imported meat over behind Big C Extra. Big C Extra gave imported meats a go but it didn't last long, now gone.

    Cheers. Nok

Good quality food costs, tis a simple equation.

if you're happy with a 100 baht steak, then more power to you.

Me, I prefer a proper steak, and yes it costs somewhere between $40-$80 depending where and when and how.

Nok, I'm surprised you settled for 2x 250 gram steaks, as they sure as heck aint the same as a good 500gram steak cooked properly.

Drinking at work which lunch would count as, is not something I laugh at nor applaud. It remains wicked and vial and most of all, unfair to those who may as you indicate work for you or with you. Sorry mate, I don't find drunk or drunks funny at all. But, it's your life, try and think of others is all I suggest. Cheers. Nok

You make a valid point. However, I immediately asked if it was a 500gram steak and was told yes. What could I do other than ask for the manager? Remember, I had a Filipino server(which seems to be common in that area i.e. Sunrise Tacos etc.) and to her credit(I guess?) she did follow up after I started eating it. The fact she then overcharged me due to not wanting to lose face I guess with the cashier, what the heck. No for those perverts on here, I didn't ask for her number etc..

    Cheers mate. Nok

I drove past a Chockchai yesterday. I'd not noticed it before. It was more like if you drove all the way down 23 until the left turn road that cuts through onto Asoke. Don't know if thats the same one or if it's moved a bit.

I have one friend who loves the place. He is part of the martini and cigar set so price is of no concern. Another friend who tried it was disappointed and found it very overpriced and not as good as the Landmark or the Marriott. I would judge any steak by Ruth's Chris or Peter Lugar's and I have yet to find anything in Thailand of that quality.

Thanks for your reply. FYI a Ruth's Chris just opened in Singapore which also has a Mortons and Lawry's(prime rib). I've not been, but am thinking about it just for the food.(also a Hooters!). Cheers mate. Nok
