Chi's Madrid Review: Oldest Expat Pub In Bangkok - Est. 1969

If you enjoy a little history and great food, then the Madrid is for you. It was established in 1969 and it is the last of the Vietnam era bars in Bangkok. They know the business with over 38 years of experience!

It is located at 78/3 Patpong Road BANGKOK.

I decided to grab a seat and wait and wait and wait for Marmite the Dog. I always thought the English were supposed to be prompt, but he proved me wrong for a second time by being 15 or 20 minutes late.

No problem. it gave me time to snap a few pictures!

I am told that the waitresses are quite friendly and if you are looking for female companionship, then they will sit down with you and chat while you eat. However, as I said, I was waiting for MtD, so I was going to have all the "female" companionship I needed

I hope you've got good eyesight - it's in Bangkok (Patpong 2, next to Radio City).

The Madrid was an old CIA hangout during the Air America days. At that time, you most likely would run into Jack Shirley or Tony Poe downing a few beers in the Madrid. Tony Poe is who the Colonel Kurtz character from Apocalypse Now is based on. The photo below is an old one from the Lucy's Tiger Den. The walls at the Madrid are plastered with photos of customers new and old.

Jack Shirley is on the right and Tony Poe is sitting with him to his left.

I ordered breakfast and was pleasantly surprised with REAL sausage patties!
This cost 135 baht and was well worth it. it came with coffee and toast. The hash browns were DELICIOUS!!

I was going to get a picture of MtD's Englsih breakie, but he was so busy shoveling it into his mouth, I just could not. Food flying everywhere. I thought I was eating with a Southern redneck mountain man, rather than a proper Englishman!!!

OK Mtd, I am done picking on you!!!!

I think I should point out that there is ample proof that neither Chitown, Marmite or I have ever been CIA, because we couldn't find this place the first time some weeks ago. Course, I guess Marmite would have to have been MI6 or something.

Next time I'll take you to the Dubliner for a real breakfast, not one of those kiddies specials that the Madrid do.

Just let me know when you're in town on a Saturday.

But I was full when i left the Madrid, so what I am wondering is if the Dubliner has doggy bags?

^ As it is called in my thread title, but if I said I went to Madrid instead of the Madrid, it would sound a bit strange.
