    Great little daytime restaurant

Just north of The Duke's by the river in Chiang Mai. Small menu, but everything we've had there has been great. Spotlessly clean and cheap. Thai food.

Yes. I recommend number 1 on the menu, and number 2.

I'll get on it next time. The name of the restaurant is something like kuaytiaw khamwan, and their specialty is noodles with a spicy, sour sauce. Number 1 is a bowl of these with some grilled pork, steamed pork, and the tastiest pork ball I've ever had in a Thai restaurant. Also some crispy fried garlic and green veg. One bowl doesn't a meal make, however - the portions are small. Number 2 is a fruit som tam. We also ordered some of those bread squares with minced prawn and pork, and crispy wontons. About 200 Baht for the two of us, and lip-smacking.

Mrs benbaaa recommends the toilets. Clean, bright, airy and fragrant. Running water too, I believe. Car parking is also provided for 20B, but they knock it off the bill if you show them your ticket.

^ Yes, but the most popular dish is noodle soup without the soup, ie heng, or however you write it in English.

    Anyway, delish.

I went here today, the place was packed. All Thai's, couldn't see a farang anywhere. I stood around at the entrance for a half minute or so and no-one seemed interested in talking to me so I left. Probably wouldn't have found anything to my liking anyway. Haven't had my taste-buds completely destroyed yet.

So instead I went to this place below (next post)

Mods, if this post should be in a separate thread then you can move it as you like.

This place is on the outside of the moat, just north of Thapae Gate. I think it's called Daret's. It also has the guest house at the rear, which I haven't looked at personally.

I'm not very adventurous with Thai food yet so I always have the Chicken Green Curry which I think is the best that I have had so far.

But, I have taken several people here, including Thai's and they have all been impressed with the Thai food which they have had and say that they will come back again.

The prices are very reasonable. Mine always comes to around 145 baht which is the curry, some rice, a drink and a plate of sliced pineapple.

Here is a view from inside looking out towards the moat. If you are heading south on the road approaching Thapae Gate and you see the purple power box, you are in the right place.

This inside photo sort of looks like the Lai Thai Guest House with the restaurant in front. In the last 17 years, we have spent many a time at the Lai Thai when up in the CM area.

^ I've just had a look at the location of the restaurant on Google Maps, and it's saying that the restaurant is called "Thanom Potchana" and that it's at 8 Chaiyaphum RoadSi Phum, 50200.
Michael, give me a call if you're ever up this way again. It'd be good to catch up.

Just got a few snaps of the Thai version of the menu from the place in the OP. There is an English version, but I now order from memory.

CM 's got some damned decent eating houses, for sure. I've often eaten here of an evening.

It's a Vietnamese one, on the right down (I think) Wichayanon road, north of Tha Pae road, near the NE corner of the old city. Good parking across the road at Chiangmai President

Eat all you like for 109 baht, buffet style.
If you don't finish everything on your plate, you get charged extra.

I'll ask the missus what the name is later.

Just got the name,(also correct price!) It's "Madame Ian", really clean, polite, popular, good food, a feast!
