    Are the refried beans canned? I tried to make them a while back and it was a disaster. I used pinto beans which might have been the problem.

    Not sure why but pinto beans we get in Thailand just don't cook up properly. I use red beans (kidney beans). Always come out nice.

    Yeah, I asked a guy who runs a Mexican restaurant here what he uses and he said kidney beans. The other problem is that I used olive oil instead of lard (which I have never seen here) to reduce the fat and cholesterol. The olive oil gave the beans a weird aftertaste.

    I use pinto, soaked in beer, then bacon grease and make my own. Always come out very nice.

    From the last time, a little cheddar melted on top as well.
