Grits is the same as South African mealy pap ...ground cob corn ...guess you could always get some popping corn and grind it yourself in a mortar or blender...yum grits and corned beef hash...lol
Gotta be someplace that sells it here though! I could not even find me Scots porridge oats though.
Blended cooked rice (solid rice soup?) is not too bad a substitute with a bit of salt.....

^Semolina can be from any grain i.e. rice or corn.
As a west coaster I hate grits not my thing but neither is black eyed peas and chitins. That is for them southerners.
Depends if one is speaking English or Merkin, I guess.Originally Posted by bsnub
I gather from the answers to my previous question that it is similar to maize meal , ie ''mielie pap'' , in which case it is widely available over here. Ask your wife/girlfriend to get the ingredients for ''chalk or tjork'' , not sure of the correct spelling but it sounds like I have spelt it.
It is a common dish served here , normally with some minced pork.
I have seen it served , and eaten it , at the roadside ''mom and pop'' shops , late night / early morning around rama3 and kaosan road when the clubs/nightspots start closing.
It is very popular with the locals.
baked or Pintos with ham hocks? One is sweet and one is not. Pintos are hard to come by here as well.Originally Posted by ralphlsasser

Must be from a Brit. They think they know everything about the US but really know nothing.
Better to know nothing about the US than to know nothing about anything.Originally Posted by tuktukdriver
My missus loves grits. She always gets an extra order or tow or three when we get breakfast at Cracker Barrel.
