    My diet: not eating shit

A little over a year ago I changed what I ate with the goal of loosing a little weight and feeling better. So far I've lost about 15 lbs and I feel much healthier. I did this not with a fad diet, but by making one fundamental change: I don't eat crap food.

Years ago in Thailand, it was extremely rare to see anyone overweight. Fat related diseases like diabetes were unheard of. Now, of course, that has all changed. I think many would agree with me that this is a direct result of importing western manufactured foods or adopting western industrial techniques for growing and processing foods with a heavy reliance on chemical additives.

So, with this in mind, what changes did I make? First, I don't eat in any restaurant where they use prepared in advance (frozen, boxed or canned) processed food. This rules out virtually all chain restaurants. Second, at the market I don't buy any processed food or any fruit, vegetables, or meats that I think might have been treated with chemicals. In the States even supposedly fresh fish can be treated with chemicals to reduce the smell as it rots on ice. More and more that means buying only certified organic products. And third, I drink no sodas of any type.

Recently, Alton Brown, a chef on the US Food Network, came out with his “diet” which helped him loose over 50 lbs. It is a much refined version of what I do.

Alton Brown's "Eat Daily" List - fruits, whole grains, leafy greens, nuts, carrots, green tea

Alton Brown's "Eat Three Times Per Week" list - Oily fish (wild salmon, sardines, etc), yogurt, broccoli, sweet potatoes, avocado

Alton Brown's "Only Once per Week" list - pasta, one alcoholic drink, red meat, dessert

Alton Brown's "Zero Times per Week" list - fast food, soda, processed meals, canned soups, "diet" anything (no artificial sweeteners)

The only thing about his list that I can't handle is the lack of rice. His main idea, and the one I agree with, is to eat the healthiest foods you can. If you do that, and stay away from the processed junk foods, you will be healthier.

I lost 3 stone, solely by omitting cheese from my diet. I was told by some people I looked better being fatter, wankers

The thing is, when someone says to a man..

"Ooh you've lost some weight", I start thinking is that a good or bad thing.

Alton Brown is not opposed to drinking. He says that since it's once a week, he makes it a good one. He is against the empty calories - those without real food value. Of course there are studies that indicate that calories from alcohol do not contribute to weight gain. So it may be appropriate to disregard his advise.

Being simply sensisble with your intake will have you lose weight if you are overweight.
Exercise every day with a minimum of 30 minutes brisk walk followed by basic stretching.
Drink no less than 8 glasses of ice water a day.
Eat a healthy breakfast of grains and fruit.
Main meal to be consumed at mid day.
One glass of alcohol only a day.
Do not consume fruit after solids.
Do not eat meat (if you have to eat it at all)with starches as in rice, potatoes.
Drink at least two cups of green tea a day.

Us older guys do not always improve our looks by drastic weight loss, diet without exercise can make us look crap.

For some of us the only solution would be cosmetic surgery.

There will be no more pills, no more bad food, no more destroyers of my body. From now on it'll be total organization. Every muscle must be tight.'

I bought a proper juicer and make juice every morning. It's great, you can chuck just about anything in there and you will extraxt the juice from it. I make about a pint and just have that until lunch if I can last that long. Gives me a ton of energy and there is some interesting stuff on the net if you google "juicing"

I've been meaning to start a thread, maybe after new years as I will probably fall well off the wagon (actually it will probably run me over as well....)

eat the healthiest foods you can. If you do that, and stay away from the processed junk foods, you will be healthier.
Doesn't really take a genius does it.
I generally only eat fresh meat fruit and vegetables, extremely rarely have a McDs or KFC, never drink soft drinks or 'sodas' as the yanks call them, I drink tea or coffee with a splash of milk and no sugar. Cold drinks normally iced tea in place of soft drinks. Don't eat cakes or donuts, pastries, that sort of thing, eat as little rice as possible. I think my biggest dietary sin would be that on weekends I like to have a fry up breakfast, bacon/sausages eggs tomato on toast. Though during the week it's mueseli or weetbix without sugar (maybe honey) and sliced fruit with milk. (full cream, you can stick your trim milk).
The biggest thing I think is that we don't really use processed food, though if you think about it, to a degree everything except raw fruit and vegetables is processed.
if I make pancakes, processed flour, salt and sugar.
Instant coffee is processed, now that I think about.

See that's a matter of opinion. The Chinese say that drinking ice water is unhealthy, you should drink warm water.
Also where does this figure of '8' glasses come from? Not saying you shouldn't (drinking water can't be bad) just that this has been doing the rounds forever but it can't actually be attributed to any authoritative source.

    Now you're taking the piss.
Do not consume fruit after solids.
See, where are you getting your information? This sounds like utter nonsense. what are 'solids'? I would consider fruit as 'solid' as any vegetable I might eat. I usually have a couple of pieces of fruit after a meal, it aids digestion.

Again, where are you getting your information? (in other words, sais who?) meat is traditionally eaten with potatoes or rice.

Juicing isn't healthy at all and the fat from the bacon and eggs and sausages just clogs the juicer up.

    Grains ain't healthy.

We have a shop in Udon who gets lots of imported foodstuff in from the UK, Aus & elsewhere. The Midget used to try a few things now and again, but everything was utter crap. All the cooking sauces, 'Colemans' style sauces, sweets and tinned stuff was almost inedible after not being exposed to shit like that for so many years.

Luckily, there are quite a few people who make products that are 'real' versions of them; made from completely natural ingredients and without all the chemical 'glue' that western companies use. They cost a lot less as well.

I'm still overweight though because I eat grains and don't do enough exercise.

^ Agreed, from what I have read lately "Grains ain't healthy" there have been huge amounts of money spent to convince us that they are! Nuts are a far better alternative...

I lost 20 kilos in doing what I suggested above combined with a strength training programme all in 2 months.98 kilos down to 78 kilos.

Now to answer some of your questions- Agree that drinking warm water with food consumption is the way to go. Ice water reacts with the fats in solidifying it.
However ice water forces the body to react to the cold which burns up calories in the process.

8 glasses of water I know has been the recommended amount for years but I do believe through experience it assists in flushing out the toxins and hydrates your body as well as minimising hunger pangs.

One glass of alcohol a day is recommended for your blood circulation.

Fruit normally passes through your body quickly where as solids dont, the consumption of fruit on top of the solids ie meat and rice for example causes it to ferment and create gasses. Fruit pre a meal or in between is good as it passes through quickly and depending on what type it is can create energy or assist bowel movement.

Meat with potatoes or rice causes the meat to putrify in your stomach where as if you eat them separate they dont. As you may know it takes up to 36 hours for most meats to be converted into energy.
Asians eat a small amount of meat compared to us Westerners. They as a result do not have the same body odour we do and to be crude generally do not fart like we do.
When Asian women immigrate to our western countries there are few that do not pack on the weight as they maintain their rice input but increase the quantity of meats and junk food because they can afford it.

Green tea assists in the removal of toxins and has been used for generations by the Chinese for this purpose.

All of the above was not made up by yours truly but unearthed as necessary being a westerner who struggled to keep off unwanted kilos.
The book Fit for Life was the beginning of my quest to control my weight having been brought up as most of us Westerners have on meat and potatoes and bread.
As we get older foods affect all of us differently depending on our metabolism.
Some skinny buggers can consume incredible amounts of junk and not put on weight where as others stack on the kilos it seems by looking at the temptations.
My back ground was in Coaching elite basketballers and Coaches and I was fortunate to be exposed along the way to correct food intake.

I vary my breakfast intake start each day with 3 glasses of water then either muesli and banana or apple with soy milk or oatbran with the fruit and soy milk.
If I eat bread it is multi grain as the white bread which normally has sugar in it as well bloats the crap out of me as does beer with its yeast compostion.
The grains act as a laxative as well for me.

A 5 km walk every morning with stretching after keeps me alive and flexible, easier to do in Udon Thani with the warm weather we have all year. It is not easy at times to get going in the morning but my wife walks with me to chat, having someone along as company makes the walking and exercise easier.
