    Freaky mushroom bags

A few days ago my Mrs brought home a couple of bags that she said would produce mushrooms. She claims they will be edible too.

This is what it looked like on arrival:

There was a bung in the top of the bag, but I threw it away before I took the pic.

Anyhoo, I was sceptical so I stuck the bags in a downstairs toilet that we don't use and today I noticed that one had actually sprouted!

They are freaking me out a bit, yesterday they were little things and today they are huge. Are they edible? They look a bit like shiitakes

(Please excuse the fishbones on the garden table, they are leftovers from our idiot cats breakfast.)

Growing your own mushrooms, tis easy as long as you keep them sterile.

I think there's a big thread about it on this forum.

    Enjoy.

I poked a couple of holes in the bag, I'll update if anything else sprouts out.

They definitely aren't shiitake (or as some of us in Japan call them, "shite-aches"), which usually are grown on wood. Look a bit more like maitake although not exactly

that either, but they look edible. Let us know.

Btw, your expectations for your cat may be a bit too high if you are expecting him to clean up after himself. Generally cats are known for not giving a fuck.

Nice try! Are you in cahoots with my Mrs?

I'll make a nice little omelet for you, her and Ratchaburi to sample first.

Ours did ok, started getting contaminated towards the end of their cycle. We made our money back and a bit extra but generally too much work for so little reward. Mrs wants to try growing another batch - I said fuck that with a pair of marigolds on.

These weren't bought as a commercial idea, I think the Mrs picked them up out of curiosity more than anything.

Each bag cost 35 baht I think.

Are they supposed to be watered or anything?

They look very similar to the bags we're using which were just six baht when bought in bulk.

Yes, just a light drizzle every now and then.

You're going to trust the Thais that these are edible mushrooms, and not the kind that destroy your liver? Bad mushrooms are seriously dangerous.

they look just like the edible ones grown in isaan, but the ones that change colour are mostly used as bait to kill rodents.
i think your wife is either ignorant of the fact, or is trying to kill you.

if you are prepared to give it a go, then make sure she eats her portion first; if after an hour or two she doesn't go into convulsions and lose conciousness, then they are probably ok to eat.

    Today I noticed that this:

    Has now become this:

I can't remember the last time I looked in on them but it wasn't more than 2 or 3 days ago, they certainly seem to sprout up fast.
