    Inner city dogs

My wife and I have been talking for some time about looking after a dog, but for several years we have been in a small condo in a high rise building.

Now, while still in an apartment type setting, we have a much larger place, ground floor, with about 40sqm private courtyard area outside.

I work close enough from our place to be able to pop back at lunch for walks and food, so he wouldn't be left on his own for too long.

Can anyone suggest a breed of dog that would be well fit for this sort of lifestyle. It'll have plenty of exercise, though no endless fields to bound on its own. It'll get plenty of attention, but will be on its own for maybe 4 hours at a time, sometimes more. Am I being unfair on the dog? I know lots of people that leave their dogs at home all day while at work, but not sure how such long absences would effect a pup.

    Any advice?

so apart from lunch times he would be left on his own all day like all the other irresponsible owners do, and would no doubt be barking his head off all day. Dogs are not like cats they are sociable and fret if left on their own.

Perhaps, hence why I'm asking. The more I think about it though, that's the situation for the vast vast majority of dog owners anywhere. He'd get taken out in the morning, at lunch and be with me all evening.

From the very first result in google, as to whether dogs are OK to be left on their own...
House Training. First, teach your dog that being home alone is okay. Every dog should be able to stay on his own all day without falling apart emotionally or becoming destructive. From the time you first get him, whether he's a puppy or an adult, practice leaving him alone

Downside of them is they're a bit slobbery. Some are worse than others. If Mrs Savy is a neatnik you may want to take that into account.

As far as it being alone all day. I dunno, compared to me having to work all day, or a soi dog eating garbage and sleeping in the rain, can't be much worse.

Do not forget dogs last a long time and cannot be just thrown away.
They also cost at least 1000 baht a month to keep for food and general care.

How about a Chuihuaha? The volume of their poop will be much easier to handle.

we've got a pug. he goes out at 6am the morning in the (small) garden. chills at home most of the day depending who is home, and maybe a walk in the evening, if not, a trot around the garden.

3 year old plays with him a bit but he's normally happier being left alone. expensive to keep though as he's got bad eyes and needs medication.

I'd like to see what morning looks like
Don't wanna drink pint after pint
I wanna wake up without feeling sick
    But I can't cuz I'm a drug-abusing alcoholic

Thank you Armstrong for the lovely pictures, the only reason I mentioned a Pug is for some reason My Son has been begging Me to get him a Pug.
We don't even know anybody with a Pug , but he's got it into his head that he wants one. I don't want any pets, because it's the parents who are left to pick up the dog shit, youngsters of today don't know how tough it was when I grew up, the servants wouldn't pick up my dogs shit so I had to do it.

Why not take your kid to a soi dog foundation pound and let him her choose …no matter big or small it is possible he/she and you will fall in love with several if not them all? Already spayed and inoculated.
Don’t know that much about it but pure bred dogs are often so inbred that they lack resistance to doggy ills. Always got our dogs from pounds..Great pets..Never been disappointed…. grateful maybe and loving.
