    Stevia

Has anyone tried growing stevia herbs? What was the result. Reading up on it, I think it can be a very good substitute for sugar especially for people who need to lower their blood sugar levels.

Ive been using the shop bought stevia powder for a couple of years now and its great stuff but a bit expensive, so growing it would be a good Idea.. good luck with that.

A recent article (forgot where I read it) says that tobacco growers in the US are switching to it. Reduced market for tobacco and a substantially growing market for Stevia. Food processors are huge consumers of it, Coke, Pepsi and a whole host of other processors switching to it from sugar, drink manufacturers, fast/junk food companies etc.

As a pre-diabetic, I have been reading up on it... seems the perfect substitute for sugar or glucose based products. A natural sweetener used just like sugar apparently.

Not sure how its refined or if it can be done here but worth investigating for sure. Thai tobacco grows well so this should also as its basically the same environment.

I've used it, and it is a bit expensive. But you need only the tiniest bit as a sweetener. It's a nice taste, too.....not sickly sweet at all.
