Thread: My fishpond problem

Ok, we have a little decorative concrete pond/fountain in the garden. I put some goldies and little black fish in it to eat the bugs.
All was well until I put in a lotus plant. Now the fish are fucking like there is no tommorow and from a handful of originals I now have a hundred or so fry, mostly the black ones but some gold too. I checked under the lotus leaves and it is covered in eggs of various states of hatching.

Is there a suitable fish in shops that I can add that will eat most, but not all the fry?
i.e something that will check the growth of the tank, but not eat it dry.

Go to the source. When I encounter problems like this, I pop over to the fish shop, explain the problem, and they can quickly set me up with the correct local predator. Of course, you might have to take a Thai speaker; don't know how good your Thai is. You might also want to bag a sample of what fish you have in there to take along to ensure that whatever you get will eat the eggs, but not kill all your fish in a spasm of ethnic cleansing.

The small dark fish you have are wild minnows. They do multiply like rabbits and faster. The small dark fish with rainbow colored tails are fancy guppies. They too seem to lack a sense of birth control. As far as keeping them from over running your pond, (and they will) all you can do is give them away or do as I did, found some snake head babies...Honestly, it works. Norton has the better idea with the small catfish though...Good luck...I have three ponds at 1,000, 780 and 600 gallons and am forever giving away small minnows and guppies.

when they are about 2 or 3 cm long, just catch, coat in a light batter and fry

Woke up this morning and my fish problem of yesterday has turned into a minor issue.
All the eggs hatched overnight and there are now hundreds and hundreds of them, maybe up to a thousand.
Basically the walls and floor of the tank are carpeted.





Off to the fish shop, will update if we find a suitable predator, on that won't grow big enough to eat the established fish..

Never seen that happen before. They look more like tadpoles than fish!

You could be right, they are so tiny it's hard to tell.
I'll take some to the shop with me.

Quite a tidy little business if you do it right.

If you have a dog you can let him drink out of the fish pond and get a nice seafood meal at the same time.

My three dogs all drink out of the lotus ponds we have and that seems to be keeping the fish population under control.

If they are tadpoles you are sorted, my experience is they are only too happy to eat eat each other.... Saying tha I've seen a video footage of a guppy giving birth, and then immediately eating her fry.

Buy a couple Angelfish. Available at any fish shop, cheap and should do ok in your pond. Pretty as well. They gobble up about anything they can fit in mouth.

If you have never been there, its directly west of Bkk, but luckily not to far from my place. Picture JJ market before the masses and aircon etc and you've pretty much got it.
A massive sheltered market spread out over about 3.5 hectares there is not much you wont find on offer. From fishing gear, airsoft, second hand jeans and boots, OTOP items, handcrafts, garden, pets and fish, the usual knockoffs and small stalls selling whatever Somchai has nicked the day before. Plan on a full day of walking an eating, and get there early as parking is a nightmare, plenty of carparks, but being out of the way everyone drives.







Guns! Including a Daisy Lever BB that I owned about 38 years ago, in perfect nick.






2nd hand or temple liberated boots. (in big sizes)

All the pavilions are surrounded by the usual thai snacks, but their are also several large areas for restaurants and sit down eating.





I don't know what it is about selling somtam and squid that requires this guy to have enough radios to direct a small war, but apparently he does need them.

Wandered around for ages in the pavillions asking for where the fish shops were, always to be sent in the complete opposite direction...Why do they open their mouths if they don't fucking know??

But finally locate it. right in the central marketplace....



Lots of shops for fish , ponds, fountains, pumps filters, you name it. In the pavillions smaller stalls usually specializing in some sort or another. The Beta guy confirmed our samples were tadpoles and promptly fed them to one of his fighting fish.






We bought some crayfish to clean up the bottom of the pond and a few bottom feeding fish.

Lots of big display fish available as well as the inevitable Koi.

^^ Glad you got it sorted! Do you have any more info on the crayfish you purchased? I have seen a few on sale before, I reckon they would make an interesting pet!

No, only they were 80 baht each and a couple of different colors available. I got red ones, not that you can see them in the pond unless you go spotlighting.
She did say they won't grow to pot size Ina small pond. Shame that...
