How do you like them apples? (Apples wanted)

Excuse the Craft Cockney quote. I need apples. Lots of them. Does any of out esteemed members have an orchard? Ideally need them with good tannin content, so not really the sweet ones (think basically that if you take a bit... it's not exactly a pleasant experience). Will pay more than the wholesaler that buys them from you will

By the way.. when is harvest for apples here? Usually it is end of October, but the climate here might make things different.

If push comes to shove with the pear things, push the skinny end in first, not the bell end, as in other pursuits....

But i typically get a lot of juice when I stick the bell end in. Surely that is an advantage?

I would be interested in hearing from anyone who has successfully grown apple trees in Thailand. I've never seen any, but I've never been up north where it may be possible to grow them. All varieties I know of require a temperate climate.

True. If one is looking to produce fermented-type elixirs from fruit or whatnot, best to use a variety that does well throughout the regions.....high altitude or not.

There are a multitude of fruiting species that are native [or smiliar introduced] and have been used in this fashion forever.

I'm pressed to understand why some might want to attempt to grow species of plant life that are nearly impossible to replicate......even by hy-bred process.

Always found Apples to be expensive , i think that there is a few places in and around Chiang Mai that may grow them ?
A friend got married to a Khmer Girl the other year and a bit of land came with her , i did suggest planting some Apple Trees on the land and see what happens with them and also having the intention of making Cider/scrumpy with the produce ..

But as with many things in Asia , nothing ever came of it !

I personally think that the natives would love a good 7-8 % Scrumpy and it could turn out as quite a money spinner ...
    Travel lightly ....

Apples need a chill for 700-800 hours a year in temps about 5 degrees Celsius which is why they have trouble in Thailand. It can be done in Chiang Rai etc but it really is t the whim of the weather if it drops sufficient in a year. The ones that worked well are mostly the sweet versions with the exception of the Anna Apple which almost has the perfect chemical make up for cider but Cider can be made from almost any apple though and you can mix into it other fruits to increase tannin levels / acidity etc which won't massively affect the taste; can't remember the name but there is a Thai fruit I tasted, handed to me by my smiling GF, that had the effect on my mouth like slurping the dregs from a tea pot where the leaf tea had been sitting fora few hours. Virtually no taste to it as well, so could be used I think to put some bite into a cider.

Of course, lots of apples in china and they are more than happy to sell you a couple of tonnes at very cheap rates but it kind of defeats the point and they are a little unsure of the type of apple it is. Email - "what Variety of apples do you have?" Answer "They are Apples". Useful.

My efforts will recreate some of the finer Normandy cidre's which will be made with the méthode champenoise. Apparently this gives the very best cider / cidre you can make although it a little more time consuming.

    Pandanus liquers are quite delectable.

A decent variety to choose from.
Natural to tropical/sub-tropical climates and soils.
