In high output season around Xmas, the winning bidder will need access to a cool 40-50 mil in cash on auction day.
That's why some of the guards have M16's... lotta money changing hands...

No, i'm not subscribing to read further.

We get a lot of rain, mountains and jungle, rained everyday for an hour or 2 for the last 6 weeks.
Lose a lot of tapping nights, but it's been raining non stop for the last 4 days, thunder storms and wind, 10 big tree blown over, that's 20 for the season so far.

New tappers house to be built from the wood and no beer for me until tapping gets going again, it's a hard life.

Don't know what's going on, rubber prices seem to be falling daily, first time I remember, gate buyers are stopping buying.
They are saying that the prices are dropping so fast that they can't fix a gate price and stay in profit.

This has all happened in the space of 4 weeks, not read any reason for the sudden drop, in fact it should be going the other way, Indonesia has reported a 520,000 ton drop in output for this financial year.

Not that it makes a lot of difference to me at the moment, it's pissing down and has been for a few weeks now, no tapping, ergo no or little rubber to sell.

Heard on the grapevine, auction cup price at the other auction was 21 Baht on Monday per kg.
We now have two local auctions, one govt sponsored, one private.

Sold cup at auction yesterday, 20.20 Baht per kg.
12 bidders, another 21 Satang lower and we would have had to go to a 55/45 split...

Heard on the grapevine yesterday, that prices in Bung Khan, the epicentre of rubber plantations in Isaan, were down to 16 Baht per kg for cup at auction and 14 on the gate...

Sold cup at auction yesterday, 20.52 Baht per kg.
16 bidders, virtually all in the 20.00's up, a couple in the 19.00's.
Poor production this past fortnight, surprised we even sold, but the tappers wanted money, just incessant rains.

Hi, this is my first post here in TD.
I'm looking to set up a rubber sheet processing plant in our farm. Our farm is around 20 rai and we mostly grow rice. There are a lot of rubber plantations close to our farm, but no rubber sheet processing facility. My FIL has around 1000 trees, next to our farm. I'm looking to setup a plant to process around 1000kg/week rubber sheets, in addition to our rice farm.
Jim, I've seen your youtube channel which shows your plant. Is it profitable to process rubber sheets? I'm looking to make around 30k baht/month. Is that possible?

Forget the idea, lots of reasons, first no money in it at today's prices.
Next, you will end up in big trouble, this no problem, no one cares, Thai attitude won't work, lots of people care, the list is as long as your arm.

First you need a rubber processing licence from the rubber board, which you won't get, then land zoned industrial, planning permission from up to 4 government agencies, registered company, EPA, factories agency and others.

You need to pay taxes and VAT on income, if not enough income you still need to submit tax returns.
Failure to comply with all the rules will see the fines rolling in weekly, it's not a cheap investment and is heavily controlled.

Why do you think nobody is making sheet anymore in the North and NE?
4 weeks ago the local auction price winning bid for sheet was 36.60 baht per kg!
Nobody would sell to you if you were only going to process 1000 kgs in a week.
Some single plantations are doing more than that. What are you going to say to the other 27 punters who want to sell to you that week?
Being a middleman is a rich man's game with a knowledge and a book of contacts including not only factories but local bank managers.
Just winning a fortnightly local cup rubber auction round here in high season recquires access to cash of up to ONE MILLION POUNDS STERLING.
Thats a million quid cash. Or 40 mil in real money.
    On the day.
Why do you think some of the bidders have personal bodyguards and the overnight reeking, stinking sacks of cup rubber waiting to be weighed, are guarded by guys with M16's....?
    Lotta money in rubber still.
But like lots of things in life, you need (lotsa) money to make even more money.
The people (us) on the bottom rung of the ladder still get by if you have a fair amount of (good) trees, but there is no money saved in the bank at the end of the year at current prices, unlike 3 seasons ago.
Still, puts food on the table and beer in the fridge and fuel in the vehicles......

At least you are getting some rubber, still raining here on and off. No money for beer and that's as bad as it gets.

Wife has just seen the price we will be paid tomorrow from our local auction on her Line app. Decent output this past fortnight, again.
Winning bid from 12 bidders was 19.25 Baht per kg.....
    2 others in the 19's, 9 in the 18's.
Will be going to a 55/45 split tomorrow as we have unfortunately gone below the agreed 20 Baht per kg price threshold.
She is a member of some Mekong/Isaan rubber producer group, and the last month, some of the prices to the east of us, ie Bung Khan and Mukdahan etc, where there is a lot of rubber, prices have been 3-4-5 Baht per kg less than we have been getting, ie 14, 15, 16 Baht per kg!
    Crazy prices!
Last week's local auction sale for sheet, the winning bid was, get this - 38.39 Baht per kg !
    Insane.

Got to say this is the worse rubber season [so far] that we have had, very dry to start, trees went dormant, normally we tap all year. Some plantations shut down where others are coming back on line, plus the large rubber nut drop. Trees seem to have known of the coming flood waters.

3 months of near on non stop rain, 2 biggest plantations you needed a boat to get to for 3 or 4 weeks, so no rubber, ergo no money, bad season last year, little cash in the bank, overall not good.

Rain stopped last Tuesday and tapping is off and running again, so beer tonight, pay day.

On the bright side, after years of paying factory, company taxes on a idle rubber factory, in the hope that prices would return to those hay days, have given up.

Wife is off this month to see [ if we can ] separate the company, rubber licences etc from the industrial land, no one is going to buy a rubber factory in this climate, but 10 rai of industrial land is a different story.

    Best of luck Jim.

We are now going to sell our little Kubota tractor, less and less hours used these days, any grass cutting this year has been taken care of by staff with strimmers.

my wife is since about 6 years buying and selling land and in the past three years we got offered heaps of Rubber farms and it is increasing drastically.
Oh wonder, all offers stating, the trees are about 9-12 years old which means exactly planted as the big "gold rush" went through the country and everybody dreamed about wealth from rubber.

about 60% are Farangs who want to "relocate" offering that the harvest is done by externals and I have only to check how the money goes to the bank.

As a person with a pretty good knowledge how business works I am not going to the bank and collect the money but do before buying a turnover and profitability prognoses and already there the shit hits the fan big big times..

An aunt in Tapong just sold us 3 rai best land in a mountain valley just to cover the losses of her rubber farms this year and buying some Date palms for starting an Orchard.
If she would listen to a Farang she would know that the Thai Dates are not even close to the near east country dates in taste and price, but anyway it seems to be a better option than rubber.

ATM there are 20 rai plots on the market incl modern house and all stuff for a rubber farmer, Freehold chanote for as low as 90k/rai but its a struggle to persuade the government to cut down the trees and make is a profitable farmland again. "Registered Rubber Farm cannot Sir" so my offer is 40k per rai and hoping for a destructive bush fire

Most provinces have an ag dept where the government will pay you a modest amount to have your trees cut down.
The present govt wants less trees.
As far as loss making on a rubber plantation goes, i can't get that.
Medium sized plantations, well run, with good trees, still bring in more money than most crops and plenty of town businesses.
Even in shitty times, at crappy rock bottom prices, my missus still has the same staff that want to work, and still, at low season output figures, can still bring in 30k a month, nett.
Double that up to 60-70k per month nett in high season (Nov-Dec-Jan).
3-4 years ago when cup went back to realistic figures of 35-40 Baht per kg, she was pulling in 100-120k per month. Nett.

Never figured this rubber lumber thing out, been up on this and other forums, logging companies paying 10 to 20,000 Baht a rai.

Now, if you look up wholesale rubber logs, Thailand, price is $300 to $400 US a ton, as a grown tree weighs in at around 1,000 kg, subtract the root system, branches etc, main trunk is 300 to 400 kg, or around $100 US a tree.

Say 70 trees to a rai X $100, that's $7,000 a rai whole sale, never been able to understand the large price difference, understand cost of felling and transport, plus other cost, profit etc, but that's a big markup.
