I just committed to a rubber tree operation. Am killing off about 500 oil palm which were performing poorly.
Will be replanting with a rubber tree and bamboo combination.
The rubber tree is the RRIN3001 specie and will mix it up with several special species of bamboo from southern China.
Apparently the two trees bamboo and rubber enhance each other. The rubber tree helps the bamboo grow taller and straighter for better lumber and the ground cover from the bamboo leaves enhances the rubber tree production without the continuing need for fertilizers.

I'll have to start a whole thread on the project as it develops.

A forestry expert from Kasetsart university is the one who recommended the Malaysian RRIN3001 which is supposed to be good for both latex and wood harvesting.

Have to say know nothing about these trees. Know some are fast growing and lumber producers, but that's it. Jim

Kee yang, Udon, 40.20 baht per kg at auction today. People have been selling on the gate the last two days, getting anywhere between 34-37 baht per kg. Very good output this past fortnight due to perfect tapping weather - no rain, cool and misty.

Jim, wet as always. Need a 10 wheel truck (or several) round here if you are going to make money selling dry cup.

Sometimes I think I will lose my mind trying to figure out what the real prices are and for what.
Just been on the phone [wife ] to an alleged wet cup buyer who makes crepe. First he quotes a price less than the drive by buyers. Then after 20 minutes says he only sells cup rubber and doesn't make crepe. Phone another company near Ubon get the same run around.
Say to the wife where are all these wet cup buyers selling the rubber, no idea all is secret.
Only good news is we hired another family of tappers, so have enough workers to get back to sheet making soon. Jim

    Jim,
the people who run/win the auctions sell this cup dry to 3 of the local factories. Tuesday just gone, the auction had just over 100 tons. Lorry/truck takes it straight to the factory, where it is checked DRC etc. Even at 1 baht profit per kg, after expenses, they are still having a nice earner. Having said that, the winner also needs 2-4 trucks, a good reliable team of workers, and access to 4 mil in cash on that day. Factory pays by cheque. So you need VERY good cashflow to work these auctions.
    Mike.

Rains hit big time today, 10 minutes street was flooded, not stopped in 8 hours and looks like it will go for days. Bad timing just spread 15.000 of fertilizer yesterday.
Life was not meant to be easy as a farmer. Jim
