Its a herb similar to ginger and others that have tubers/roots underground that are the edible bits.

It's called Kha in Thai

Hmm...I'm guessing this one:
but perhaps I can't post pics yet!...it's called Greater Galanga. More mild then ginger and soft when boiled, quite tasty actually. Doesn't have the same spicy bite that ginger has.

Can't help you, the only roots I buy are called, Lek, Porn, Nid, Nok, Tam, Noi........
I believe this is what you were looking for: ว่านห้าร้อยนาง (wanharoinang).
A couple of sources say it is in the turmeric family (Curcuma zingiberaceae), but don't give any more details.
Edit: The impression I get from the Thai Agricultural Science Journal is that Curcuma 'Haroinang' does not have a Latin scientific name.
