At least eight people were killed when the incident occurred in north-eastern Italy, just nine days after another quake in the same region. The 5.8 magnitude disaster was centred in the Emilia Romagna region and was felt as far away as Milan

Derby fire deaths: Mick and Mairead Philpott arrested

The mother and father of six children who died in a house fire in Derby have been arrested on suspicion of murder.

Mick Philpott, 55, and his wife Mairead, 31, were arrested in Derby on Tuesday and are due to be questioned.

Jade Philpott, 10, and brothers John, nine, Jack, eight, Jessie, six and Jayden, five, died in the house fire on Victory Road on 11 May.

Another brother, Duwayne, 13, died three days later in hospital.

All six children were asleep upstairs when the fire began in the early hours.

Derbyshire Police said petrol was used to start the fire which was believed to have begun below the house's letterbox.

Syrian diplomats to be expelled from UK

Three senior Syrian diplomats are to be expelled, the Foreign Office has confirmed.

Others including France, Germany and Australia are also expelling diplomats in a coordinated protest against the killing of civilians.

The UN has said most of the 108 civilians killed in Syria's Houla region on Friday, including 49 children, were "executed".

The Syrian Ambassador left the UK earlier this year for health reasons.

The diplomats being expelled are the head of mission in the London embassy and two other senior figures.

The BBC's diplomatic correspondent Bridget Kendall said the Foreign Office wanted to send a stark message to the Syrian government in the wake of the Houla killings that it can not expect to act with impunity.

Emma Winnall dies after attack in Birmingham home

A 93-year-old woman attacked in her home has died of complications arising from her injuries.

Emma Winnall suffered a fractured skull, a broken arm and wrist and a partially severed finger in the attack in Birmingham overnight on 30 April.

She has been in intensive care since being found at her home in Moseley and died on Tuesday morning.

Two people have been arrested but have been released on bail. Police said it was now a murder inquiry.

Supt Richard Baker of West Midlands Police said it was "desperately sad news".

"Clearly, this has now become a murder inquiry.

No-one capable of carrying out such a despicable attack deserves protecting” - Supt Richard Baker

"But given the extent of Emma's injuries, combined with her age and vulnerability, this investigation has always been treated with the same level of seriousness as a murder investigation

Hedge fund boss Alberto Micalizzi fined £3m by FSA

Hedge fund boss Alberto Micalizzi has been fined £3m and banned from working in finance by the City regulator, the Financial Services Authority (FSA).

The penalties are for concealing losses of $390m (£250m) and lying to investors in late 2008.

Mr Micalizzi and DDCM are referring the decision to the FSA's Upper Tribunal, which may overturn it.

In a statement, Mr Micalizzi said he was confident the tribunal would see the FSA's conclusions did not add up.

He also criticised the FSA for announcing its decision before the tribunal hearing.

At the time, Mr Micalizzi was chief executive of Dynamic Decisions Capital Management (DDCM). It is the biggest fine imposed by the regulator on an individual not involved in market abuse.

FSA said it had also cancelled DDCM's permission to carry out regulated business.

The FSA's ruling said: "Mr Micalizzi's behaviour is amongst the most serious that the FSA has encountered," describing him as demonstrating "a total lack of honesty and integrity".

It said that Mr Micalizzi's fund hid its losses by buying a bond and then artificially revaluing it to create a $400m gain.

It also said that Mr Micalizzi deliberately concealed the true value of the fund from a new investor who had invested $41.8m.

Aung San Suu Kyi first trip out of Burma in 24 years

Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi has left the country for her first trip abroad in more than two decades.

She is travelling to Thailand for the World Economic Forum on East Asia.

For the past two decades she has been either under house arrest or afraid that if she left Burma she would not be allowed to return.

But recent reforms led to her election to parliament last month and she is confident that the authorities will not stop her going back.

The pro-democracy leader was given a passport in early May.

As she left the airport in Rangoon she told the AFP news agency the trip was "part of my job. I'm going to stay for four or five days... I will visit one refugee camp".

An estimated 130,000 Burmese refugees live in camps in Thailand having fled persecution at home.

After her trip to Thailand she plans to return to Burma before travelling to Europe in June.

She intends to go to Norway to formally accept the Nobel Peace Prize which she won in 1991, and will also visit the UK where she has family

Volvo's self-drive 'convoy' hits the Spanish motorway

A convoy of self-driven cars has completed a 200km (125-mile) journey on a Spanish motorway, in the first public test of such vehicles.

The cars were wirelessly linked to each other and "mimicked" a lead vehicle, driven by a professional driver.

The so-called road train has been developed by Volvo. The firm is confident that they will be widely available in future.

The project aims to herald a new age of relaxed driving.

According to Volvo, drivers "can now work on their laptops, read a book or sit back and enjoy a relaxed lunch" while driving.

The road train test was carried out as part of a European Commission research project known as Sartre - Safe Road Trains for the Environment.

Four members of the street gang Mara Salvatrucha are having their prosthetic legs repaired or replaced on May 29 as a part of an initiative to improve their quality of life.

The plan to fit disabled gang inmates with prosthetic limbs is part of a peace process between gangs and the government, pushed by the Catholic Church.

Around 160 jailed Maras, or gang, members require prostheses for their handicaps, according to the Salvadoran Handicapped Organization.
