Pair 'attempted £5,000 Coleen Rooney blackmail'

Coleen Rooney lost her mobile phone at a Black Eyed Peas concert last year

Coleen Rooney was subjected to a £5,000 blackmail plot involving hundreds of personal family photos on her mobile phone, a jury has been told.

Jennifer Green, 25, and Steven Malcolm, 42, from Manchester, deny demanding the cash from the wife of Manchester United footballer Wayne Rooney.

Both were arrested after Mrs Rooney's phone went missing at a concert at the MEN Arena in Manchester in May 2010.

The trial at Manchester Crown Court is expected to last a week.

Ms Green's partner, Lee Platt, has admitted handling stolen goods and blackmail, the jury was told.

Mrs Rooney lost her mobile phone, which was thought to have contained family photographs, at a Black Eyed Peas concert last year.

Jennifer Green and Steven Malcolm deny demanding the money

Deborah Gould, prosecuting, said: "The prosecution case is that these two defendants together with Lee Platt, who is the partner of Jennifer Green, came into possession of the camera and the memory card and then sought by unlawful means to make money out of the situation."

Ms Gould said the defendants Ms Green, of Heaton Park Road, Blackley, and Mr Malcolm, of Silkin Court, acted as a gang and contacted Manchester United Football Club trying initially to extract £1,000 from Coleen Rooney's agent for return of the memory card and the photographs.

She added: "Following some unpleasant publicity about Wayne Rooney, they then decided to up the ante and increased the amount of their demand to £5,000.

"They approached various media outlets including Hello magazine, The Sun and (Daily) Star with a view to selling them, these private stolen images."
    The trial continues.

Higgs boson: Excitement builds over 'glimpses' at LHC

The Higgs search is approaching its endgame at Cern

Scientists are widely expected to present evidence on Tuesday that the most coveted prize in particle physics - the Higgs boson - has been glimpsed.

While the Higgs is crucial to our understanding of the Universe, it has never been observed by experiments.

At a seminar here in Geneva, teams will present a progress report in their hunt for the tiny particle at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

But the LHC has not recorded enough data to claim a formal discovery.

Finding the Higgs was a key goal for the $10bn (£6bn) particle smasher. The collider hosts two experiments - Atlas and CMS - that are searching for the particle independently.

There is intense excitement among physicists working at Cern, the Geneva-based organisation which operates the collider, over hints that the hunters have cornered their quarry.

"It is a fantastic time at the moment, you can feel people are enthusiastic," Dr Christoph Rembser, a senior scientist on the Atlas experiment, told BBC News. "It is really very lively."

Chinese fishermen 'stab South Korean coast guards'

The Chinese captain reportedly stabbed the coast guards with a shard of glass

The captain of a Chinese fishing boat has stabbed two South Korean coast guards, killing one and injuring another, officials say.

The clash took place after the boat was stopped for illegal fishing in the Yellow Sea off Korea's Incheon port.

Korean officials seized the vessel and detained nine Chinese crewmen.

A Chinese foreign ministry spokesman said Beijing was trying to clarify details and was willing to work closely with the South Koreans.

Chinese crews are regularly caught fishing in Korean waters. They are usually released after paying a fine.

About 430 Chinese ships have been seized for illegal fishing in the Yellow Sea so far this year, up from 370 last year, according to the coast guard.

Australia health boss Joel Barlow 'took $11m in a week'

Joel Barlow had been investigated previously

A senior Australian health official has been arrested after allegedly stealing AU$11m ($11m; £7m) in just one week.

The authorities say Joel Barlow stole a total of AU$16m over three years from Queensland Health, where he worked as a finance manager.

Reports said he funded a lavish lifestyle and even passed himself off as a Tahitian prince in social circles.

After the arrest, Queensland Premier Anna Bligh said the health department would be dismantled.

She said the enormity of the fraud was the "final chapter in the life of the ailing agency".

She added that it was difficult to tolerate the "sick administrative performance of this mammoth organisation".

Queensland Health will now be split into separate hospital and administrative arms. It will cease operating as a department on 1 July 2012.

South African Janice Linden executed in China

Thousands of people are executed each year in China

China has executed a South African woman for drug smuggling, rejecting an appeal by President Jacob Zuma to spare her life, an official says.

Janice Bronwyn Linden, 38, was executed more than three years after her arrest.

Human rights groups have repeatedly condemned China for imposing the death penalty, saying its legal system did not guarantee a fair trial.

South Africa's government said the execution would not affect its close diplomatic relations with China.

Chinese authorities allowed two of Ms Linden's sisters to spend an hour with her before before she was executed with a lethal injection, South Africa's privately owned e.News reports, quoting a correspondent in China.

An acute butter shortage in Norway, one of the world's richest countries, has left people worrying how to bake their Christmas goodies with store shelves emptied and prices through the roof.

The shortfall, expected to last into January, amounts to between 500 and 1,000 tonnes, said Tine, Norway's main dairy company, while online sellers have offered 500-gramme packs for up to 350 euros ($465).

Last Friday, customs officers stopped a Russian at the Norwegian-Swedish border and seized 90 kilos (198 pounds) of butter stashed in his car

Father Jean Say jailed for murdering his children in Southwark

Say killed the children to spite his estranged wife

A man has been jailed for life for stabbing his son and daughter to death in their beds, while they were visiting him in south London.

Jean Say, 62, a retired concierge, attacked Regina, eight, and Rolls, 10, at Empire Square, Southwark, in February, on a weekend access visit.

Say, who admitted the murders, killed the children to spite his wife who had left him earlier, the Old Bailey heard.

He was ordered to serve a minimum term of 30 years in prison.

Court documents revealed Say called his wife after the killings and said: "I have killed your children. Come and get the bodies."

Dundee teenagers locked up for Facebook riot threats

Shawn Divin (L) and Jordan McGinley were both administrators of the Facebook page

Two teenagers who used Facebook to try to start a riot in a Scottish city have been locked up for three years each.

Shawn Divin, 16, and Jordan McGinley, 18, were administrators of a Facebook page called "Riot in the toon" which urged people to "kill some daftys".

The Dundee riot page was published during the summer's unrest in England.

Divin, who was described as an inmate at Polmont youth offenders institute, and McGinley, from Dundee, had earlier pleaded guilty to breaching the peace.

Sheriff Elizabeth Munro sentenced Divin to a total of four years and three months, which included one year for breaching a previous probation order and three months for breaching his bail by inciting riots.

The teenager had been subject to the order after he helped lead a "small scale" riot in May 2010, when a group of about 30 youths attacked a bus in Dundee.

Dundee Sheriff Court heard that the Facebook page encouraged others to smash up buildings, loot shops and attack police officers at the time of the riots which swept several English cities in August

"Parviz Sorouri, an MP on parliament's foreign policy committee, said that Iranian experts were in the final stages of recovering the data from the surveillance drone, which was captured on Iranian territory last week.
Tehran has paraded the loss of the drone as a blow to the US and claimed it plans to reproduce the technology. It said its security forces had shot the drone down using previously secret air defence systems.
The drone, which is made from the latest 'stealth' technology, has been presented as a valuable windfall for its defence scientists.
"Our next action will be to reverse-engineer the aircraft," Mr Sorouri said. "In the near future, we will be able to mass produce it. Iranian engineers will soon build an aircraft superior to the American (drone) using reverse engineering."
Other Iranian officials have hinted that it could allow American rivals such as China the opportunity to acquire the technology."

Thousands of copies of the newspaper 'France-Soir' are dispersed on the pavement as workers throw others from upper floors of the paper's headquarters, on the Champs Elysees in Paris on Dec. 13, 2011.

Around 100 workers from the CGT trade union occupied the Paris headquarters of the newspaper France Soir on Tuesday, Agence France-Presse reported, carpeting the Champs Elysees with copies of the paper in protest against the impending termination of its print edition.
France Soir was launched in November 1944 by two underground resistance fighters, according to The Local, a news website. By the mid-1950s, its circulation had grown to 1.5 million, but a long decline has seen the figure fall as low as 60,000 in recent years.
The current owner, Russian Alexandre Pougatchev, plans to switch to an online-only version of the paper on December 15, resulting in the loss of 89 out of 116 jobs.
