Dan Carter offloads. He gets the first points of the World Cup on the board with a penalty in the fourth minute

The All Blacks keep the pressure on and just six minutes later they score the first try of the tournament when they carve open the Tongan defence and Israel Dagg goes over in the corner. Carter's aim is off this time as he misses the conversion, so it's 8-0 to the home side

Nineteen minutes in there's another swift and decisive New Zealand attack. They play a series of wide passes across the field from inside their own half. The ball is worked out to Sonny Bill Williams on the left touchline. He promptly plays a blind reverse pass inside to Isaiah Toeava, who offloads to Richard Kahui. The winger cuts inside

before sprinting towards the line. Dan Carter has put his scoring boots on again and the ball sails between the posts. It's 13-0

My cap's better than yours moment

All Blacks full-back Israel Dagg is tackled by Tonga's fly-half Kurt Morath. The New Zealander has more luck in the 22nd minute when he skips past a few tackles and goes over in the corner for his second try of the game. It's converted so the score is 22-0

Dagg goes from try scorer to try maker in the 33rd minute when his superb hand-off and lay-off allows Richard Kahui in past Vungakoto Lilo for his second try of the game. Again Carter has his shooting boots on and slots the ball home from right touchline

It's not all one-way traffic, Taniela Moa evades a tackle from Richie McCaw. Tonga get some points on the board on the stroke of half time as Kurt Morath kicks a penalty. The half time score is 29-3

The All Blacks start the second half as they did the first with some relentless pressure. However it takes them 18 minutes to add to their points tally. It comes courtesy of another nice try, this time it's Jerome Kaino who goes over. There's a marvellous chip-and-chase from Richard Kahui, who catches his own kick and passes inside from the right touchline to Kaino who streaks over the Tonga line

There's some tremendous defending by the Tongans who soak up wave after wave of All Black attacks. During these attacks the right sleeve of Sonny Bill Williams' shirt is ripped off which means a shirt change and a cacophony of wolf whistles from the crowd

With 7 minutes to go Tonga get the ball over the try-line when Alisona Taumalolo burrows his way through a mound of players and gets another 5 points on the board. Morath converts and it's 34-10

New Zealand seem afronted that Tonga have had the temerity to score a try and go down the other end of the pitch and score one of their own. Piri Weepu passes to Ma'a Nonu and takes the return pass inside before waiting for Nonu to pass him on the overlap again before feeding the ball to the centre to goes under the posts to score. It's an easy one for Carter who makes it 41-10. Six minutes later the final whistle goes and New Zealand have a victory under their belt (they are the only country to have won every one of their World Cup pool matches) and Graham Henry must be relieved at that and also the fact that his players came through the match unscathed
