Lethal blast hits roadside eatery in Pakistan

Boodstained rescuers could be seen bringing out casualties

A blast at a roadside restaurant in south-west Pakistan has killed at least 11 people and injured 10, with others feared trapped in rubble.

A bomb may have caused the explosion in the two-storey building in Dara Allah Yar in Baluchistan province.

One report described residents digging through the rubble with their hands as they struggled to find survivors.

Both separatist insurgents and Islamist militants linked to the Taliban have been active in Baluchistan.

ARY News, a Dubai-based private Pakistani TV channel, quoted officials as saying 35kg (77lb) of explosives had been planted in the building.

Officials feared further casualties, saying at least 40 people had been inside when the blast brought it down.

Colombia arrests key Mexico cartel 'money launderer'

Police in Colombia have arrested a woman they say laundered money for Mexico's Sinaloa drug cartel.

Dolly Cifuentes Villa was detained in a wealthy neighbourhood of Medellin.

Police say she took over the money-laundering business from her late brother Francisco, the personal pilot of the Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar, who was killed in 1993.

The Sinaloa cartel smuggles large quantities of cocaine from Colombia to Mexico and on to the United States.

Head of the Colombian police Gen Oscar Naranjo said Ms Cifuentes, 47, was "a high-ranking link between Colombian and Mexican drug dealers".

The Lone Ranger 'shut down by Disney'

Disney's much-anticipated big-screen adaptation of The Lone Ranger starring Johnny Depp has been put on hold, according to industry reports.

Deadline Hollywood said the studio had stopped pre-production over problems with reducing the movie's estimated $250m (£154m) cost.

The Social Network star Armie Hammer was set to play the masked Texas Ranger with Depp as his partner Tonto.

Filming had been due to begin in October in New Mexico.

Jerry Bruckheimer had been lined up to produce the film, with Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski also on board.

Deadline reported a source close to the film, who said producers were now discussing whether to take the project to another film studio or to continue at a later date with a lower budget.

China protest closes toxic chemical plant in Dalian

Authorities in the north-eastern Chinese city of Dalian have ordered the closure of a chemical plant after a mass protest over pollution.

Scuffles had broken out on Sunday between police and thousands of protesters calling for it to be moved.

Officials ordered the plant's closure "immediately" and pledged to relocate it, state news agency Xinhua said.

Last week a storm broke the dyke around the plant, sparking fears the paraxylene (PX) it makes could spill.

PX is used in fabric manufacture and can be highly toxic.

About 12,000 residents took part in the protest, some of them moving across the city chanting slogans and waving banners.

Xinhua said the city's top official, Tang Jun, had tried to calm the crowd on Sunday but the protesters showed no sign of dispersing.

There were no reports of injuries in the scuffles during which riot police were deployed to shield the municipal government office.

Calls for protesters to gather on Sunday for a "group stroll", as the rally was termed, had reportedly been circulating on social networks.

"Group strolls" have become a favoured tactic for Chinese people to show discontent with the government.

England riots: Theresa May defends approach to policing

Home Secretary Theresa May has defended the government's handling of police over riots in England, saying it was clear the public wanted "tough action".

"Ministers must ensure the police know what the public expect of them," she told the BBC.

Met Police chief Tim Godwin had accused MPs of "inconsistency of guidance", and others are uneasy at US "supercop" Bill Bratton advising ministers.

Extra police are still on city streets, and the weekend has seen no unrest.

Weekend court sittings are continuing to hear the cases of more than 1,000 people charged since violence flared last weekend.

Among those appearing before Birmingham magistrates were Joshua Donald, 26, and a 17-year-old boy who will return to crown court on Monday charged with the murders of three men hit by a car during disruption in the city.

A peace rally is being held on Sunday afternoon in Winson Green, the neighbourhood where the men were killed. Thousands were expected to attend.

Meanwhile, politicians and senior police officers continue to be at odds over the handling of public disorder

Gary Locke, right, the new U.S. ambassador to China, walks out the front door of his residence with his wife Mona before speaking to the media in Beijing, Aug. 14. Locke, the first Chinese-American to fill the post, in his previous job as U.S. commerce secretary, often chided China over its trade policies, but in his first media appearance since taking up his new job in Beijing he gave a more benign message of potential cooperation.

The opening weekend of the Premier League

The reigning champions Manchester United travelled to the Hawthorns for their first match of the season and, despite winning only five times on their travels last season, looked sprightly from the off. Wayne Rooney gave his side the lead following a skilful exchange with Ashley Young - Rooney's low shot was perfectly placed into the far corner of the net. This image captures not only the moment of execution, but also Rooney's newly grown barnet; that hair transplant of his wasn't a waste of money after all

Rooney gets mobbed and Chris Smalling reaches over for a quick ruffle. Yep, it's all real

United signed David De Gea from Atlético Madrid for £18m in the summer - the 20-year-old was meant to be a competent replacement for Edwin van der Sar. But, only a week after his hapless showing in the Community Shield, he's been displaying sure signs of incompetence again. De Gea allowed Shane Long's tame shot under his body to gift West Brom an equaliser

But United earned a fortuitous winner in the closing stages when Ashley Young's cross was turned into his own net by Steven Reid in the 81st minute

At St James' Park, Arsenal were without Cesc Fábregas and Samir Nasri, both of whom are keen to leave the club but can't seem to locate the exit door. And Arsenal were soon without new signing Gervinho, too, as he earned a red card for his reaction after being dragged to his feet by notorious Newcastle scamp Joey Barton

Here's the offence for which Gervinho was banished. More of a pat than anything. Arsène Wenger wasn't too happy - the game ended goalless
